pre-boil gravity is 1.053. Target was 1.057. Mash efficiency was 85%. Had to dick around with the correct mash temp. I added some boiling water to increase temps and it was too high, so i added some cool water and it was right where i started. Mashed at 149-150. Wanted to mash at 151. Oh well. I'm excited for this brew.
Starting the boil now. From mash to collecting the boil pot wort (7.62 gallons) it took me 2.5 hours (75 minute mash).

Boil it a little longer for that extra few tenths.

Just finished up. OG at 1.060. Target was supposed to be 1.068. Total Efficiency was at 70%. Typically I get 80%. Adjusting my mash temperature must have affected my efficiency. So instead of a 7% beer it will be closer to 6%. As long as it finishes off well.

So it appears that I lost my lager chest freezer this past weekend. It climbed up to 67 for the diacetyl rest and didn't go back down. Hopefully it broke then and not when my lager was fermenting. The Vienna lager tasted fine before the diacetyl rest so here's to hoping.
I did buy a ton of grain from some home brewers leaving the hobby, so that's good.

I ordered some vanilla purée from Red Stick Spice for my praline porter. I received a package from them today, but they sent extract instead. I emailed them after opening the box, and quickly received a response from them that the purée would be shipped today.
Got to love great customer service. Y'all support RSS when you can!

That sucks... You didn't throw it out already did you? You'd hope by now that someone in the club or other club was competent in fixing chest freezers on the cheap.

I have not thrown it out yet. Still haven't given up hope that it still works, hoping that it just overheated a little.

This. Anne over there is really nice and is worth supporting.
But I could have bought some and mailed it to you with some beers.

Brew day for Brew at the Zoo is not off to the best start.
Got everything setup, turn on the pump to start the RIMS and it sounded like a someone threw a cat in a blender.
Pump head was all seized up. So I took it all apart, cleaned it, put it back together, tested for leaks and we are back in business.
I miss my old gravity fed cooler system on days like this.

I was just thinking about that ice water recirculation pump setup Brewstock was showing on Facebook the other day. Seemed like a great deal.

I use a cheap pond pump and some fittings I picked up from Home Depot to recirculate ice water. Comes in very handy during the summer.

And yes LST. Brewstock is selling it for $33 or something. Couldn't find a cheaper pump on amazon so I assumed it was a great deal.
