In his honor, here's a link to a performance by he and BB King performing "The Thrill is Gone" in the 70s.
The Thrill is Gone
to the legend. Hard to come by blues and soul like that anymore.

Saw him open for Widespread Panic in Memphis on 9-21-07. Great opening act!

I was in a band that opened for him at the Isle of Capri casino in Lake Chuck once. Did not get to meet him backstage but his crew were really nice people.

Seen more than a few times. It was always great watching him live.
His version of Ain't no Sunshine is the best.

For the Bicentennial Celebration of Covington, LA, I did a couple of history talks recently. Part of the talk is on the West 30's, which is the historically black neighborhood literally next to the RR tracks .. low income, shotgun houses.
Bobby "Blue" Bland was a regular playing the bars there in the 50's, 60s and 70s, part of the Chitlin Circuit (blacks couldn't play whites-only venues). Others that played the bars were BB King, Irma Thomas, Ray Charles, James Brown, Fats Domino.
Bobby "Blue" Bland could sing.

quote:Pardon my nitpicking but it wasn't that black performers couldn't play whites-only venues, it's that blacks often could not attend (some venues were segregated, others were whites only). The Chitlin Circuit was for black audiences and acts popular with them.

That's pretty cool. Always great to perform with the legends.
