That wasn't a shot at you specifically, but many seem to have this notion that Vasquez holding the ball until the last second is how the plays are drawn up.
In all fairness, it's how the plays seemed to be drawn up with Jack at the point.

measured as one of the most athletic centers at the combine, and produced for 2 years in arguably the strongest basketball conference in America
Im not drooling over the guy, but you can do a lot worse at 13

Monty has said he wants a San Antonio style offense where the ball is passed at least 3-4 times per play. Jack playing hero ball and Vasquez trying to use screens to get past the 3 point line have unfortunately been the best options for initiating the offense the past 2 seasons.

I still think a deal with Dallas is essentially us giving up on FA before it begins
Agreed, but I think next offseason is when we would rather make a splash.

AND handing them Dwight/CP
Is why I don't do it.

A team is going to buy that draft pick and/or take VC or Marion off their hands regardless if we do it or not. Why not be the ones to benefit if the asking price isn't too high?

The potential price varies though. Turning $15 million in cap space into $3.5 million with Shawn Marion and #13 is very different from turning $15 million into $10.5 million with Vince Carter and #13.

Agreed, but with Marion, you at least significantly upgrade at SF for this year. This while hopefully giving your #13 pick at SF a year to develop.

And you have an expiring contract to dangle at the trade deadline.

Having Marion for one year is not that bad. The FAs available at SF aren't that great this year and next years draft has
Andrew Wiggens
Jabari Parker
Julius Randle
Dario Saric
Glenn Robinson III
Noah Vonleh
Wayne Selden
Perry Ellis
Jerami Grant
Kyle Anderson
And next years free agent SF are
Loul Deng
Danny Granger
Paul George
Mickael Gelabale
Evan Turner
Rudy Gay
Signing or Drafting a 3 next year is better than sigining or drafting one this year IMHO.

No way George makes it to FA next year, as the Pacers will extend him.
Granger? Not so much. They may keep him around for a playoff run but he'll walk at the end of next season.

This list isn't that much more impressive, if at all, than this year's.

Could get down with Deng. Along the same lines of Iguodala this year.

Danny Granger
Who knows if he'll ever play more than 20 games a season again

Paul George
Not going anywhere

Mickael Gelabale
Who? The dude's 30 and played for the first time in the NBA last year since '07-'08. No thanks.

Evan Turner
Has improved, but it seems like the light has yet to fully come on for him. Not someone I would hold of on a year for.

Rudy Gay
Isn't worth what he'll demand.
The draft, on the other hand, does like promising for SFs next year.

I'm not saying any of those guys are all stars, but with more on the market and better SF in the draft, the price GMs are willing to pay will be greatly decreased compared to this year.
Pekovic is going to get a big contract this year. Next year, Minn might let him walk if they could sign someone else of similar quality or draft a SF.
Supply and demand people. Playing the SF market next year seems the smarter choice.

Fact is we aren't winning the finals next year...more picks more assets I would do it...you can trade Marion for more pieces down the road as well and he comes off the books in a year...why not I would entertain it the 13th Isn't a bad pick...

Deng is just as injury prone as Granger
Id bet Monty and dell look into a deal w DAL. This is the exact type of move they should be making.

Any chance we get the 13th and flip it for a 1st next year? We can probably flip Marion for a developmental player or a 2nd rounder at the trade deadline...all in all for acquiring a year of cap you could get a free draft out of the deal which is better than FA to me. Cheap prospects with guaranteed rights for several years. Again before you know it you have what a team built with so much young talent everyone will come calling trying to make a deal.
Posted on 6/19/13 at 4:16 pm to GynoSandberg
It's definitely something Dell should look into, I just don't get a few things about the situation:
Can this type of deal with Marion (or Carter) even happen before the draft?
Would Marion have to opt in before this can happen? If so, when is his deadline to opt in/out?
What is the effect on our cap situation if Marion decides to retire after being traded or we bought him out?
Would Marion's ugly form rub off on Rivers and make his shot even uglier?
