Can't beat a carbed 2 stroke evinrude or Johnson for kick arse reliability and longevity.
Eta: every manufacturer puts out that one kickass model that you can't kill though.

Majority of work boats have Yamahas on them for a reason. 1st gen verados sucked, these new ones not bad, but fuel effiecency sucks compared to yamahas and Suzukis. Inside Yamahas intakes suck up too much shite and shut down, Optimax does much better in shallow water IMO. Again this year at pro ska out of fourchon last weekend I heard the merc guys worked thru the night, Yamaha guys were at Artie's chasing tail.

I have nothing but good to say about the Suzuki 4 strokes. Mercury has been the only one to leave me stranded.

Seems like most of the manufacturers prefer Yamaha also. Suzuki is underrated BTW.

This has something to do with it. Lots of Yamaha packages these days. I actually shopped to avoid Yamaha.

I would have never thought you were the kind of fella that liked breaking down.

In my experience, Yamahas are the most reliable outboards. To get any real speed out of them, thought, you basically have to pair them with the perfect hull.
I've known a few guys with Mercurys and none of their motors have lasted longer than 6 years.

Every boat I've owned had a Yamaha on it. 2 of them were 2 strokes and 2 were 4 strokes.
0 problems from any of them. None of them were real speed demons but I wasn't worried about that. I prefer reliability.

I have the only been stranded in a Yammy, just stopped on us out of the blue...
My mercury has never stranded me in 8 years...I guess it varies from motor to motor. Both brands have good and bad reports, I'm sure

Last go fast pussy boat I ran, 3 Verados each failed. Scratch that, merc said they know there's a problem they won't fix it until it fails. I made the last one, think patsy cline, fall to pieces

Merc threw a rod and seized on us in Timbalier Bay. The best thing I can say about a Merc is at least it isn't an OMC...

I have owned several mercury outboards on saltwater boats. I currently have three Yamahas (two F250s and a F60).
I will never own anything but a Yamaha. Look at what every single person has that is out there every day for a living: Yamaha. I don't know if I've ever seen a charter captain or a work boat with anything other than Yamahas... At least in Louisiana.
Most of this is a history of quality and reliability, but what hasn't been said here is how much better the Yamaha mechanics on the coast are than the mercury mechanics.
I would put the guy at Outcast Marine up against any Yamaha mechanic in the south. There's not a mercury equivalent.
