I'm going with three years. The network of charging stations is the biggest hurdle. Takes quite awhile the build all of those nationwide.

I'd look into it if it fits 5 people comfortably, costs less than 50k, can go 300 miles on a single charge, and battery swaps/charges less than 10 minutes.

The Model S can fit 7, starts at 60k, can go around 200 miles and takes 20 minutes to charge on a supercharger.

This is a bunch of bullshite. The industry is so hardheaded and resistant to change. I love how something simple as swapping a fricking battery is considered big news. Pathetic.

I have no clue what it looks like but I bet the tesla battery weighs more than 500lbs at a minimum and costs a few grand.

I need for Tesla to prove that this model can work well before I go splash 75k into a company that is unproven. In terms of design and innovation, Tesla is Tier 1 but they need to establish the infrastructure which isn't easy.
The smaller model for 30k in a few years will be the car that probably defines how well Musk is able to scale this thing (assuming he gets the network ready).
I don't care about a 25 minute wait for a free charge, so I don't plan on using the 90 sec swap. But, it is just another sign of the investment that the company is putting into the network which I find to be target #1.

So I'm kind of confused, they said in there that a swap would cost 60 to 80 dollars. How is that saving you money when it only lasts 200 miles?

I'm a Noob to all of this, but I'm having the feeling that this could come back and bite Tesla in the arse if this takes off, similar to how unlimited data has been a problem for telecom companies.

Musk described it as "fast or free". It is free to charge at the supercharger but it takes ~20 minutes to get a full charge and no battery replacement is necessary.
If you want to get in and get out very quickly, then the 90 sec battery swap is your best option. However, it costs $60-80 to do it. This option will be for those in a rush or they have a high value on their time.
I expect this is a stop-gap strategically. Eventually these superchargers will be able to complete a charge in 5-10 minutes and will basically make the swapping stations obsolete. I think they will then have to re-purpose the swapping stations into service shops of some kind or seriously drop the price of the swap costs. It isn't worth $60-80 if you only save 5 minutes...

Tesla factors the cost of the electricity you would get from the supercharger stations into the cost of the vehicle when you buy it. Assuming their revenue and usage models are accurate, then this shouldn't be too bad of risk exposure. Honestly, most people will charge at home overnight so supercharging stations are for people who are on to go during the day and will need a little extra juice at some point (or someone traveling across the country, hence why these swaps are such a big deal).

They need to figure out a way to do other things while charging the car. Like getting a car wash or rotate your tires or something so you do not feel like you are wasting 25 minutes.

I guess some people will never be pleased. I never got a car wash WHILE I was fueling up with gas. If you are travelling across the country use that time to take a nap, read a book, plan the route, ect.
I've only used the supercharger a few times, and while it takes me about an hour to charge, because I needed about a full charge to get to where I live without stopping, I used that time for myself. The few Supercharger stations in CA that I have been to are around mall type areas, so I just walked around the Sony store for some time.
