Cellini is spinning a tale on the AJC website that he was fired to save money. Whatever makes you feel better.

Ultimately, this was an excuse, Cellini said, for the station to cut salary and insert a cheaper syndicated morning show, Cellini said. "Mike & Mike" will likely be on tomorrow morning.

I always thought that would be a point in favor of their termination. I've watched other more successful comedy teams (ranked #1 in their market) take less money and eventually lose their jobs due to the changes in the radio market. If you're the "voices that built 790 AM" (as others have said on facebook), you likely have larger than average salaries. To maintain profitability, those are key targets for cost-cutting.
So controversy when you're a target for termination isn't a good thing.
Edit: Also, if this was the best they could do after they spent the weekend on it, I would have looked at firing them just for how bad the skit was in regards to the jokes and production. That's regardless of the subject matter.

Jesus Christ there are some blowhards in this thread. I appreciate steve gleason as much as anyone else, I watch that punt block at least once a month. ALS is about as heartbreaking a disease as exists in this world and to see it strike down someone as strong and vibrant as Gleason is frightening and sad. I don't mind that they the radio guys got suspended or even fired, that's the nature of the beast.
That being said, on par with sandusky and Jeffery Dahmer? Making an off color, harsh joke is on par with literally murdering and raping young boys? Do you think attempting to flirt with a girl at a bar who isn't into you is the equivalent of rape?
I also hope no one expressing the view that these guys deserve to go straight to the 7th circle of hell are fans of South Park, oor Family Guy, or Daniel Tosh, or Anthony Jesselnik, or Dave Chappelle. Bc they all have jokes as cruel, tasteless, shocking as these radio guys, except funnier. Book of Mormon won a million tony's and had a song called frick You God about africans dying of aids and raping babies

I feel bad for the people working on that show, the people doing research, producing, taking calls, etc.. These hosts needed to apologize to the Gleason, and they did. Now they need to apologize to the people whose job was lost because of their stupidity. Little an apology will do in this case though. They need to help them find another job in the business. These hosts weren't just fired, the entire show was canned. Truly pathetic

I haven't read this thread but judging from a couple of pages on the OT, I'm sure it's much of the same back and forth.
Bottom line: you're a fricking idiot if you don't think these guys should be fired.
I just heard the "skit." Wow. If I made as half an inappropriate comment at my job, I'd be fired on the spot. And my comments don't potentially reach millions of listeners.
People who don't want him fired are probably the laziest workers at their own jobs who don't hold themselves accountable for anything.

Are you serious? Once a month? Hold off on calling others out for a whacked point of view... and look in the mirror,

I just heard the audio on deadspin and it was worse than I thought.

Way to completely miss the entire point of the post. Once a month was an exaggeration, my point was I appreciate what Gleason did for the Saints as much as anyone.

Just read this whole thread. It's really sad that this happened and even worse that it happened on the day Gleason's MMQB article came out. He's a good man and has a good soul who didn't deserve this.

I just heard the Gleason bit for the first time. It was a terrible thing those guys did. I think firing is a little over the top. I think a month suspension without pay would have been better fit for this situation.

I think we ALL need to take a step back and toast Mr. JW.
With one thread post, you had 3 radio hosts on the other side of the country fired.
You are God.
