There is a difference between "free speech" protection and "dumb speech protection."
Free speech protection ensures that the government, within reason, cannot infringe the rights of individuals to freely speak their minds (I say within reason because there ARE provisions in law that restrict speech that is harmful, in certain situations).
DUMB SPEECH protection does not exist - the government may let you say what you want, but that sure doesn't protect you from losing your job, friends and respect for being inherently stupid. Which is what these jerks did, to put it nicely.

one guy knew it was wrong and didn't stop it

Cliff notes? Any recourse?
Posted on 6/17/13 at 6:03 pm to Pwishik1
I put this sort of speech in line with the Westboro Baptist Church. I understand the need for free speech and that we don't want the government legislating morality....but damn... What is wrong with people? Only recourse is to do what was done...get them fired.

I don't see how these guys are going to live with themselves when Steve does unfortunately pass.

they were suspended around lunch after the bad press and fired by this afternoon once the audio started getting out and bigger news sources started running it

If this is true, good.

I believe in free speech. I think people should have thick skin. But there are limits. Attacking or making light of the terminally ill, who are trying to be an uplifting positive force, is beyond the pail. It's not like making fun of somebody for their religious belief...or their skin color....or their dialect, weight or ancestry. These people are dying, and their loved ones are suffering while this horrible process occurs. THEY shouldn't be subjected to this type of crap. I suspect Steve Gleason wasn't bothered by this one bit...because he, by all accounts, is a positive uplifting force who uses humor to teach about his circumstances. He can laugh at himself because he is at peace with it all. (Brilliant SI article, by the way) But those around him who love him are hurting terribly and they are the reason this was so outside the line. They have no control over it and don't deserve to have to listen to their loved one get ridiculed for something he can't help, and something they know will eventually take him from them. It isn't right. Anybody with a soul, or at least a sense of decency, can see this in my opinion.
well said. I hate all of the faux outrage everybody gets these days but this is a little different. you dont attack(make a joke of) a guy thats trying to finish out whats left of his life by spending time with his son and family and doing everything he can to help and uplift others facing the same battle as he is.
Im not religious but if there is a hell, there is a special place for these guys for trying to take a man on his deathbeds dignity from him. Its pitiful and if I were associated with any of these guys I certainly wouldnt have much to do with them any longer. pretty despicable.

An update: we all got wacked. I apologized to Michel Gleason, she understands it was a stupid joke. I'll do my best to help Team Gleason

No one made me apologize earlier, no one made me reach out. I was ignorant and it was the right thing to do. Got what I deserved.

It's amazing how many people don't understand what free speach means. I agree with the way you broke it down

I find that pretty reasonable, but South Park would have been cancelled 100 times over by now if held to this standard.
So South Park should now be the standard for decorum and civility in society? Pathetic.

Can there be an update in the original thread?
Has the original audio been posted?

Decorum and civility? It's a morning zoo sports show. Holy shite, and KC I really like you but come on. This isn't planet Vulcan.

Wouldn't be surprised if Blank and the Falcons organization put pressure on 790 to fire them
I wonder when the radio contract is up for re-negotiation
I would love if both of these things were true.

That may be the sickest thing I've heard ever.
That's on par with Sandusky and Jef Dahmer sick.
Those guys have no conscience. None. Zero.
Everything they get negative from this they deserve.

So explain how this had anything to do with sports. And face it, if Gleason didn't have ALS, they would never have done this bit. They picked him out specifically because he does have ALS. Even the DJ's are now apologizing and saying it was over the line. I agree with you on some things, but this was out of bounds.

You could possibly be taking this a bit too far.
Just possibly.
