The underlying reason for "alway online" or "checking in" is no doubt to prevent hacking as much as possible. I hope it works!

We may have just discovered another reason for this other than piracy reasons

Me to, if they are going to give real rewards then people shouldn't be able to cheat their way into them.

Having cloud-powered achievements makes it easy and consistent to run challenges across all players of a game simultaneously.

It makes it possible for developers to add new achievements and challenges after their game is initially released. Why is that good for you?

1) It means you can get new achievements without always being required to buy new content (read: free!) or download title updates.

2) It allows developers to learn from and respond to user activity and focus on adding stuff that you’ll find fun. For example, let’s say a certain game is known on community forums to have a fun little sub-game of kicking chickens. Wouldn’t it be amazing if the game developers noticed the community enjoying an unintended aspect of the game and creating a challenge around it, with a reward to boot?

3) It empowers developers to involve the community (that means YOU) in the achievement creation process. If they so choose, a developer could run a contest for users to submit and vote on challenge ideas, for example, with the winning idea being released to the public as a legitimate Xbox Live Achievement. Not too shabby!

You can see Xbox trying to get there.

They have been getting better at putting games on demand for sale

LINK

I have been buying up games on sale like crazy. My 250gb hard drive is down to 11gb.

I really really think Xbox had the goal from the start to try and emulate Steam as much as possible this time.

You could always trade away all of your current games for .50 cents to make up the $8 difference!

Yea. I think we see a marketing shift from them soon. They are probably in their war room working on it as we speak.

THey've already headed in this direction as anyone who has Forza Horizon knows.

They recently added a free DLC for that game which includes 1000 new achievements for every car in the game. That's 1000 for each individual vehicle.

With their larger source of disposable income it is going to be really interesting to see their marketing push heading into the holiday season.

I'm already expecting a large push on their entertainment/kinect side of things to try to reach that audience. Prime time tv spots in fall to get in the minds of some parents

I wouldn't be surprised either if they worked out a deal for the Call of Duty commercials to feature the Xbox One

They just need to get out in front of the misinformation that's out there.
A friend of mine called me yesterday to laugh about how bad the xbone was going to be only to later text me saying he preordered it after reading more about it.

This is the issue of the hive mind of the internet. There is so much misinformation out there that they have to get out there and fix it.

Like the trade ins that are ultimately decided on by the devs not xbox.

I am still trying figure out where the idea that you need faster than google fiber internet to do the online check ins.

I know they made some steps with this line of thinking with the avatar gifts which were nifty. Would be cool to these rewards expanded. Giving people more reason to hold on to their games longer and play them more would help out a lot of folks.

One of the main reasons I never trade in games is because of DLC and their new achievements. Now if I got rewarded for this.....

Is anyone else a little worried that they would hold back some things that should be included in the game from the start just to make them only attainable through gamer scores?

I guess in reality this is no different than unlocking characters and maps by completing the game like games used to do. Those always had me replaying levels just to unlock all the maps/characters

It sounds like it's going to be things that would be held back anyway on all platforms or Xbox will pay publishers to add things to only the Xbox versions.
