Never been a huge metal fan, but have learned to put up with it more since I moved to NOLA... Never been around more adults that listen to this stuff than here... Good people though...

Not all metal is equal. Go buy an Opeth album. Listen to some Strapping Young Lad. The worst metal shredding is no more cheesy or wanky than jam bands and their constant noodling.
