Umps love to try to make themselves part of the game. Nothing but glorified hall-monitors. Can we replace them with instant replay already?

A friend of mine has been a HS ump for 40 years. Last spring a fastball hit him square in the mask. Catcher never got a mitt on it.
Him: Son, why didn't you catch that ball?
Catcher: Sorry, he crossed me up.
