Why I believe we got a steal in Chase Thomas.

Footage of him vs. ND
I like watching this videos (there are a ton more of them by the way) more than the highlight videos because you get a larger picture of what you're actually getting. Even the best players make mistakes and have bad plays.
What I've seen from watching several of these videos:
1. He's extremely versatile. He rushes from the outside, lines up in the middle, puts his hand in the ground, and even splits out wide into coverage almost as a nickel back, and doesn't do a bad job at it either.
2. He's smart, and his instincts are great. This makes up for his lack of straight speed. He doesn't make too many missteps. When he does, it hurts, because he just can't get there in time.
3. He does well on outside contain and reads the read/option very well. He doesn't over pursue often, and it gives him the ability to play clean up. He'll be a real asset in limiting the amount of cut back runs.
4. He's disruptive, and even when he can't get near the qb or get off of his block, he creates a problem within the play, sometimes drawing double teams, and it allows his teammates to make a play.
Some of the negatives:
1) He can jog on the field at times when he thinks he's out of the play, and maybe he is, but you can never be certain. That's correctable though.
2) His tackling technique can be randomly sloppy, even though it's sound most of the time.
I'm really excited about this guy. I think he'll see plenty of playing time this year.

Pretty solid analysis. I'm excited to see what we'll get from him.

So why did he fall so far? Not challenging that he could be a steal for us but legitimately curious as to why he got passed on in the draft. Was it just his 40 time or what?

Lack of athleticism and short arms. No doubt he should have been drafted though. I'm sure most teams see him as having limited upside, but I'm optimistic that he can be a starting caliber OLB.

I think hell be right there with Wilson backing up one of the OLB spots. I also agree we got a steal. He was a key cog in a very good Stanford defense.

yeah, he seems like uses his hands pretty well. He doesn't get locked up with his blocker a lot. And when he does, like you said, it isn't a bad thing because his effort might leave a lane open for someone else to get through and make a play.
another positive about this guy is that he was a durable player at Stanford. A three year starter who never missed a game. This could be big for him because we had a few guys who couldn't stay healthy last year at LB.

He won't make the team

Pre-draft, I was hoping we'd get him in the 4th rd. but really didn't think he'd fall that far.

Like others have said, he's a limited athlete, but he was still projected to go somewhere in the 3-5 rds (I even seen some project him going in the late 2nd round).
It's still a shock he fell out of the draft completely, but as the draft goes on, teams start drafting for measurables (see Rufus Johnson).
The dude can straight ball though, and it's pretty impressive to be a 3 year starter in a 3-4 in college and be used in so many ways. Same with Reddick (I might do a thread on him as well of things I see).
Of course I'm just a fan and don't have a trained eye. I don't wanna act like I'm doing film study.

Its funny but I have the guy starting at OLB and some have him not making the 53.
Sounds about right
The guy looks really good fighting off blocks and getting to the QB despite not having top tier NFL measurables.
The Saints are due a steal or two in the draft

At the very least the guy will be a solid contributor, it seems to me. He was damned good in college.
