I don't think a Redskin is overly derogatory. There are plenty of other things in this world we should be getting our panties in wads about. Not the Washington Redskins.

And this raises an excellent point. There are names out there that do, in some way, stereotype a particular race/ethnic group. The poster above comically referred to the "Fighting Irish". It is a great point.
However, I think you have to go beyond the name. What was the oppression? How long did it last? These factors are important for the analysis.
Personally, I find the name "Redskins" to be overly derogatory and incredibly inappropriate.
Great discussion, AJF. It's better than you just bitching about "Obama's America".
