Harper leads safeties in tackles since 07

Per NFL Network. Product of a horrible front seven or does Roman deserve some credit?
Yes, he's terrible in coverage but he can still occassionally create havoc in run support. Atlanta game from 2011 always comes to mind.

Safeties having a lot of tackles isn't exactly a great thing. Receivers get tackled a lot by safeties after making catches.

It's not a good thing for the team but at least we know he is doing part of his job, unlike most of the defense last year.

It's not really a good thing and his problem is coverage.

Retitle to The truth about Roman Harper

When a player in the backfield has that many tackles in that span, you know the pass rush is doing a shitty job.

BECAUSE HE HAS THE MOST OPPORTUNITIES.. no doubt..

Want to know what's crazy? Harper has been #1 or #2 in total tackles every season since 2007.

Not really that crazy since he's been heavily used in run support since coming here.
Last year he shouldn't have been that high because he played a lot more coverage under Spags. That was a product of an overall shitty defense.

Not really something to brag about

I feel like he's been used near the LOS more then most safeties, but yeah it's generally not a stat that's too great for safeties to have.

He hasn't been used that differently than most strong safeties in the league to be honest. He's just not fast, so he has to gamble a bit by cheating up or backing up, depending on what he/the MLB reads from the offense. I think the high tackle numbers speaks more (in a 4-3) about OLB play than anything else.
In recent years, watching Shanle attempt to close a gap on a run play was torture. Last year OLB play was no better with the injuries to our FA pickups. Don't be surprised if he is the starting strong safety guys, he is solid in the traditional role of that position.
