Just to let you know: I just ordered both books. I especially look forward to seeing the Kaufman book that is edited to highlight key features. I have enjoyed the Petersens but it is tough as there is not much color, it being a small field book and all, aside from also being about 40 years old. Hell, they may have discovered 3-4 new species in that time!
Thanks a bunch. Until moving here about 5 years ago, i had quit birding for a good while, but living on the lake and near Tensas NWR, I have started up again. Many thanks for that post!!

Kaufman will be a big improvement on Peterson which was the best of its generation. Good luck out with them. Hell at Tensas you could hit the jackpot and find the Ivory-billed Woodpecker again, though that is an extreme longshot.

A starling perhaps?
Little known fact. Noah intentionally had every bird species but a starling.
They made it to the New World anyway..... sorry, worthless bastages.

Since this is about birds.....Yesterday saw my first bald eagle just west of Alex. Spent alot of time in the woods etc., but this was my first. Sucker was about 75 feet up flying over the Hwy to Leesville....huge and beautiful!!
