The UT San Diego story
quote:
Former NFL offensive lineman Kyle Turley told U-T San Diego that he is suffering from severe mental problems, and has considered suicide, as a result of multiple head injuries he sustained while playing football.
Turley, 37, officially was diagnosed with two concussions during his eight-year NFL career, according to the newspaper, but he believes he suffered many more that went undiagnosed.
He told the paper that there is no history of mental illness in his family, and acknowledged he takes medication to help curb his suicidal thoughts.
"No one in my family has ever gone crazy and killed themselves or thought about that. I have," Turley said during a phone interview with U-T San Diego. "It's not a thought that is fleeting. It's a thought that goes away when I'm on my medication, and the thought of doing a lot of crazy things as well and making unbelievable decisions."
Turley told the paper that the medication, Depakote, "stops me from doing a lot of things my brain wants me to do in destructive ways."

Use to be one of my favorite players
He played back when the Saints were actually kinda likable.
Sad to see the situation he's in. I hope and pray for the best.

Neither had my wife's until her father did it. Not saying that head trauma may have something to do with it, but this is not completely out of the ordinary.

genetics does play a strong role in depression. it's certainly not 100%, but it does say a good deal that nobody else in his family has a history and all of a sudden he has suicidal thoughts due to depression.

Here's an article from January of this year explaining the possible link between concussions and depression:
LINK
I'm not saying it's 100% accurate or anything, but it's worth a read.

What a shock. I thought Turley was so normal.

Seeing his shitty band live made me depressed and want to kill myself.

How did you get in a club?
eta: the worst part of the helmet toss was how he threw it backwards. it kind of killed it.. it would have been cool to see him chunk it down the field.

Or maybe they're depressed because they were big shite all their life and can't deal with being an average person. Either way they knew what they were getting in to and got paid a lot to do it. I'm tired of hearing their sob stories.

Hell, I'd be pretty damn depressed if I had to play for the Aints

They knew 20, 30, and 40 years ago that they could acquire degenerative brain conditions from playing football?

Its not hard to figure out that getting beat in the head for years could cause problems later in life.

I have no doubts about the link between concussions and these symptoms.
I have alot of doubt as to whether consussions are the cause of Turley's symptoms.
Maybe they are, but he always seemed pretty unstable even before the thousands of collisions.
