Optimal for who? Under what conditions? Sorry, worthless point is worthless since you can't objectively call any pistol "optimal for self defense". I would say the 1911 is optimal for those who carry and shoot them better than any other handgun they own. Same for Glock, Sig, H&K, Kel-tec, etc. I own both a 1911 and a USP .45 and both would equally serve the self-defense role for me.
