Quick note on this. Apparently the script contained a scene where David (Fassbender) meets with a young Guy Pierce on a yacht in a sort of computer generated reality. In this scene Pierce was to appear as a young Weyland. And this is when Pierce tells David to "try harder" to find something that would provide the life-extending formula Weyland/Pierce is there to find (and subsequently leads to Davis dropping the black goo in Dr. Holloway's highball to see what would occur). This explains why Pierce was cast yet only filmed as an old man in makeup. For whatever reason the scene didn't make it into the movie.
