I liked Prometheus just fine. And there were TONS of questions about it after people saw it...there were a lot of things people didn't understand. So I don't think the "people didn't understand it" comments are meant to be offensive, but rather a throwback to some of the threads back when the movie was out.
I liked it a lot actually. I wasn't blown away by any of the acting, but wasn't hoping to be in a movie like this. The plot was fine for me. Some of the actions of the characters were stupid, of course, but it created conflict and was mainly just plot movement. All in all, I thought it was plenty good enough and will definitely check out the next one (assuming it gets made).
But the pure hatred this movie gets is hilarious to me.

I haven't read past the OP yet but I re-watched Prometheus twice this past weekend on HBO after originally seeing it in theaters. I agree with the OP to some extent. The movie was actually beautifully shot and had some good moments in it, but overall it was a cluttered mess thanks to that assbag who did Lost. It just left me so unfulfilled and disappointed because under the surface is a great film that never reached fruition. Damn shame.

I get that people didn't like it, but they seem to nitpick it infinitely more than most other movies for some reason. I have a feeling that had this not been marketed as a "Alien sequel," people would've had completely different opinions about it. I feel like their expectations were far too high and it had no chance of meeting them for most people.

remember the initial reaction was "what? there's no action?"

Hated: Guy Pierce. Cmon man, even if he returns as young Wayland it won't make up for how cheeseball he looked as a 140 yr old rickety tycoon.
Quick note on this. Apparently the script contained a scene where David (Fassbender) meets with a young Guy Pierce on a yacht in a sort of computer generated reality. In this scene Pierce was to appear as a young Weyland. And this is when Pierce tells David to "try harder" to find something that would provide the life-extending formula Weyland/Pierce is there to find (and subsequently leads to Davis dropping the black goo in Dr. Holloway's highball to see what would occur). This explains why Pierce was cast yet only filmed as an old man in makeup. For whatever reason the scene didn't make it into the movie.

Definitely. I expected it to be great, and when it was just alright, I was pissed off. I'll stick with calling it disapointing.

Agree and disagree. I agree with you to the extent that I found so many flaws in the movie as a direct result of its supposing to be a prequel of sorts to Alien. That said, had it not been marketed as such or even made as an independent film, I wouldn't have wanted to see it so badly and,, thus, wouldn't have had such expectations.
I'm convinced Lindelof came in, changed the original script and completely focked it up for what was supposed to be a movie with a more linear and logical connection to Alien. Instead, it became the first of the overdone trilogy that Hollywood loves nowadays and now the assbag Lindelof is reportedly not even doing any more in the trilogy!

I remember a ton of questions after it came out, and thinking that most of the things people bitched about were explained in the movie. Also remember thinking I watched a different movie than most people cuz I came away from it with very few questions or nitpicks.
And that's not a "movie snob" response but more a "I was confused" after reading about everybody's problems with the movie. And that YouTube video (that I think may have been posted earlier) does a good job of explaining the questions people had back then.

Exactly. People wanted it to be SO good because of Alien and Ridley Scott. And because of that, I can easily understand why people would be disappointed in it. But I don't get the outright hatred.

the inconsistency regarding the black substance leads to 20,000 questions, not plotholes as people claim. We should know what it is and what it does to understand exactly what kind of threat it poses to the earth. as far as all of the questions regarding what the engineers were doing on the planet, why they were going to destroy earth (seemingly) etc... i liked not having it spelled out for me.

IMO if the questions aren't even remotely answered in the film it's the same difference I.e. tomato tomato.
You say magic do all wonder sludge, I say pothole.

Quick note
Thanks, didn't know that. I'd seen some editing room floor stuff like the Engineer speaking & Idris telling Theron about his military past, but not that one. Might've helped my outlook.

Regardless I didn't like the mystery of the ooz
I loved the mystery of the engineers and I had the ooz been reasonably explored I'd say I wouldn't want a sequel

I like movies that are imaginative, Prometheus accomplished that. Is it alien or blade runner? No. Is it 20x better than what I'm used to for the science fiction genre? Yes
Exactly.

all of the people shitting on it will probably say that they like John carter, immediately invalidating their opinion on science fiction.
Wow. That's bold.
To each his own man, no need to start insulting people who may or may not know more about science fiction than you do.
And for what it's worth, these are two completely different takes on science fiction:
1. John Carter tried to pay homage to the adventurous nature of the origins of science fiction
2. Prometheus tried to break science down, ask large deep questions, and make the viewer think.
John Carter succeeded in what it set out to do, Prometheus just didn't.

I'm not insulting anyone, but i will never understand liking JC and hating (not disliking) HATING Prometheus.
I think you and I have thoroughly debated this.
