We are being told that FEMA has paid out tons of $$ to them recently and they are not fishing right now. Anybody trying to buy crabs or lump can easily see that something is going on. Jumbo is over $30/lb. That's crazy! I'm just curious if the FEMA thing is true or if its just a supply problem.

Could be because they aren't really in season now?

you will get good crabs if you wait until the crawfish dry up around mid June or first of July. That is when they really start running.

And many of Louisiana crabs are shipped to the Chesapeake bay region since its mostly fished out which keeps the cost here up.

Crabs, especially Males, bury themselves in cold months when water temperatures decrease. What may seem like good ambient weather this time of the year doesn't necessarily mean water temps are good enough for crabs to emerge. A majority of fishermen have pulled their traps out due to lack of supply. Those that do continue to crab are seeing a reduction in their catch by 80-90% which also explains high prices.

I know plenty of crab fishermen....and I couldn't scrounge any crabs for my Good Friday boil. Lots of guys have picked up their traps, as the catch is very low right now....so it's not cost effective to run a whole line of traps just to catch a few crabs (bait, gas, etc). The catches in SE LA south of the lake are way way down, even allowing for seasonal variations. No one really knows why, but there is rampant speculation about oil/Corexit issues....

Again, it's not a typical March/April pattern, catches in Barataria and Terrebonne are way below seasonal norms.

I figured it was because of the cold water.

My buddy and I just acquired 20 traps from a former commercial guy so we will be starting to run them towards the end of April when the water starts to warm up a little

Do the fisherman have new rims and fresh new gold teeth? First sign of FEMA $.

He probably meant BP money and not FEMA.

Yeah, I did mean BP money. My bad. To clarify, I am aware of the seasonal changes in crab availability in this area. I asked because I work in a very well connected seafood restaurant and just about all of our seafood purveyors can't find crab anywhere. This is way out of the norm for us. All we can get is a pound or two of jumbo at a time and that will last us about 15 min. Also, we are looking at Mexican or Central American claws and clawmeat. Not very good products.
