Found a Gun

My Grandpa gave me a .22 revolver a few years back. It was in terrible shape, but he is a drunk so I didn't think anything of it. Well today I found out that the origin of this gun was the ditch out in front of my house. Yup, he found it out on the side of the highway two years ago and I have had it in my possession ever since.
If for some reason my house/vehicle is ever searched and this weapon is found, could I get into any kind of trouble? I mean, the gun is a complete pos, but i'd still like to keep it. Just hope it wasn't a murder weapon or something.

If it has a serial number it could be listed stolen

Best bet would be to get a cop buddy to run the serial for any stolen reports. I would think there's probably something going on with that gun. Although, my cousin did drive off from the boat launch with his Ruger single six on the tool box, never to be seen again. IF ANYBODY FOUND A RUGER SINGLE SIX .22 ON THE PARKWAY IN BOSSIER CITY PLEASE CONTACT ME!

File off the serial numbers and store it under the driver's seat and you should be good.

Along that line of logic, why not just shoot a cop with it and find out how many other murders it might've been used in.

Good idea, I have a few cop friends who may can help me out. Just looked up the value of the gun... $25-$50

That's trouble.
No telling if it's a murder weapon or not without running the number on it.
It is odd that it was just found on the side of the road though. Don't think I would hang on to that if it was me.

Boating accident worthy, somewhere deep.
Or get someone to run the numbers...

If the serial number shows up as stolen or used in a crime, you are fricked

Which one? I gave two ideas and I was just joking on the second one.

How would the cops get the serial number if the criminal three it on the side the road?
Maybe stolen. But if used in a crime they may not have numbers on file.

Get numbers run, if not stolen
wait for gun buy back
Turn it in
Profit $$

Not going to be able to tell if its been used in a murder from the serial number. Stolen, yes although not sure how likely a $50 gun is likely to be reported stolen.

obvious throw away gun is obvious. Somebody probably bought a gun cheap, did work, and then threw the gun in grandpa's yard.

Or Grandpas a liar and used it to assassinate JFK and just pawned it off on you.

Lsp has a section devoted to this. You Call them and tell them you recently acquired a gun(bought from joe blow, handed down, etc) and they get the serial number and model and run it. Apparently they give you a good to go or bring it in immediately response. I believe they have access to FBI info. Not sure if they go ahead and reregister it in your name or what.
