I went with Mexican Gulf Fishing Company last year and it was great. I posted a couple of pics in the SeaVee thread. No idea about timing.

Check out paradise outfitters

Deep South is a well known one too but I'm not sure who's captain anymore since the bluefin incident.

If you wanna do grand isle, check out lance walker with fish commander.

I've heard of lance. I've just always heard go fish Venice for tuna because you get to blue water quicker. Is that true?

All depends on where the water is. If you want a fast trip out, go with Ryan Dicharry out of Fourchon. His boat flies. Also, you can't go wrong with Lance. All the guys from Venice and Fourchon pretty much fish the same water this time of year.

Not really...out of Venice, you are traveling the river, "protected water," quite a ways before reaching the open water. Once in open water, you'll get to blue water fairly quickly.
If you leave out of Grande Isle, you'll be traveling in open or "unprotected" water for a larger part of the travel.
Note that "protected" is loosely used here due to the trash and potentially shallow water portions of the MS river.

Getting to blue water depends on the rip currents more than starting location.

All of this being said, I'd say that the fall is the best time to leave out of Venice because the weather is usually a bit more predictable or stable. In the spring it can be very windy. In the summer, you have to worry about surprise afternoon thunderstorms. In the winter...well, cold (especially on the river).

As far as guides, there are a lot of qualified services out there. Call around, talk to the captains, get prices etc.

I personally feel like Mexican Gulf is setting the standard right now. Everything they use from an equipment standpoint is the top of the line. The captains are young, relatively speaking, but have been doing this for a long time as compared to their age.

Probably the best captain around for Tuna and worth the trip to Grand Isle.

No suggestions from Treblehook?

Mexican Gulf

Have fished on Billy Wells' boat for 3 straight years. One trip had 10 tuna, 3 wahoo, and 2 blue marlin
