What cards were you using again?
Posted on 7/4/13 at 2:56 pm to bluebarracuda
I wish amd would drop their new line faster so I could see those before I buy. I'm also concerned about getting a 1440p on my desk, I don't really have much room. How does 1080 or 720 look on a 1440 monitor btw?

Anytime you run something fullscreen at lower than the monitor's native resolution it will look like garbage. Definitely don't get 1440p until your hardware can run games on it at decent settings at 1440. Selling your current card and getting a 7970 is absolutely the best choice.

That question is based on when I play older games that don't support that high of a resolution.
Posted on 7/4/13 at 3:48 pm to Mr Gardoki
Sometimes you can force the resolution, or run in windowed mode, or simply frown upon such inferior games.

Ha the classics are just as good sometimes man
Eta: I don't know how much you guys have looked at the 770 but most benchmarks and reviews give it better performance at 1440/1600 than the 7970 despite only 2gb of VRAM.

The vram doesn't matter for benches because they usually don't use more than 2.
How does it perform against an OC'd 7970?

Trades blows. Why would it not matter for benches?
Posted on 7/4/13 at 5:14 pm to Mr Gardoki
Most benches wouldn't utilize the 3gb of vram that the 7970 had. Most of them probably only use 1-1.5 at the most (at 1080p or lower)

Even if the bench is at a higher resolution?
Posted on 7/4/13 at 5:37 pm to Mr Gardoki
That's why I said 1080 or lower. Got a link to those benches? I want to check them out bc I've been reading different stuff on reddit
Posted on 7/4/13 at 5:39 pm to bluebarracuda
On my phone now but yea I will link them.

Just look for comparisons of in-game performance at 1440p. Any dx11 game. I don't doubt that the 770 has the potential to outperform it in some respects. But you have to look at the results across multiple mainstream and demanding games. Some may favor faster vram over more vram.

I think some of those more processor heavy games like far cry seen to favor nvidia, I'm guessing because of the cuda cores?
Posted on 7/4/13 at 6:30 pm to Mr Gardoki
Since I don't mine anymore I should really reconsider my somewhat blind fanboyism to amd gpus. I've been primarily using radeon cards for years and years, back when they were ATI.. My first gpu was a radeon 7500 - LINK
I remember playing far cry on my Radeon 9800 pro, which I'd flashed to 9800 xt. 8 pixel pipelines bitches.
On my 1024x768 planar LCD.

Man, right now you could have a 7870 for about $145 if you bought this, sold Crysis 3 that comes with it on Ebay for $10, and used this $10 coupon.
If someone is thinking about building a starter 1080p rig they should jump on that IMO.
