re: Will Paul Mainieri's base salary ever eclipse Nikki Caldwell?

wb is not a "revenue producing" sport, technically neither is mens baseball, but I think we have a unique situation here they already have Title IX, what more do they want?

When LSU wins the baseball National Championship this year, Alleva will make Mainieri the highest paid baseball coach in America.

Aaaand there's no pics of Caldwell in this thread.

Because it's based on the market. Could Manieri go coach college baseball somewhere else and be paid as well? Likewise for Caldwell?
But what's driving the market prices? Is is not an externality-- Title IX?
Aren't universities required to spend equal portions of their athletic budgets on men's and women's sports. (Is it based on % enrollment?)
My guess is that universities are overpaying women's basketball coaches to increase the percent of their budgets being spent on women's athletics.
Perhaps, someone more informed can briefly explain Title IX's role in the seemingly high salaries for women's basketball coaches given the losses almost all programs incur.

Bad guess. If Caldwell, Beth Torina, and DD Breaux pooled their salaries they wouldn't be able to pay Johnny Jones.

Well, I don't think Title IX is the reason that women's basketball coaches make what they do. The rule is basically that to be Division I you have to have at least 7 men's sports and 7 women's sports. I don't believe that pay is a part of it. If it was, salaries across the board for all sports would be more equal.
Universities are not going to pay women's basketball coaches what they do unless they feel IT'S WORTH IT. So, even though many on this board believe that women's basketball isn't worth it, and brings no value to the university, those who are in charge of our athletic administration believe otherwise.
Don't have the numbers in front of me but, I'll bet that the exposure that women's basketball gets today is equal to or exceeds what college baseball gets. And thus, the university would deem paying a basketball coach a "market value" salary a worthy investment. Otherwise, they'd make what the golfing and swimming coaches make...........who also coach women's teams.

nor should they, glorified, Title IX driven positions, where athleticism and DI should not be mentioned in the same sentence

I always laugh at this kind of attitude.^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
As if female student athletes don't deserve the same opportunity to represent their school on an athletic team.
Dude enter into the 21st century with the rest of us.

special olympic type sports scholarships next? it's no longer about putting the best athlete in the arena? everyone one must get a participation award?

Pretty sure State law says a coach can't be paid higher than the highest paid faculty member. So Miles et al are paid the same as the highest paid Dean on campus.
Anyway I think it is something like $175,000 and that is what their State Pension would be based on.

You really didn't just make that comparison did you?
By the way..................no, it's not about "putting the best athlete in the arena". That's for professional sports, not college. That's hardly why college sports exists.

if you aren't trolling....why should caldwell make anywhere near what Mainieri does?
He brings more money, people here actually care about the sport he coaches, and he is one of the best at what he does.
no one gives a shite about womens basketball...anywhere outside of tennessee. Baseball at LSU is second only to football, and it actually makes us money.

You're treating LSU athletics as if its a buisness and nothing else, which is false.
If it were then we'd only field 3 teams. What's the buisness justification for keeping the golf team? Or the swimming team or even any of the track teams?
You can't simplify it like that and like it or not Women's Basketball is an important sport in many quarters. YOU don't have to like it but that doesn't mean it isn't worth what we're putting into it.
