Golfers: Keeping a Recognized Handicap

I kept a handicap growing up at the club my family belonged to, but since graduating college, I've moved on and no longer maintain my handicap. I've been wanting to start maintaining it again, but I want to make sure it's recognized and valid so I can enter events and play at nice courses. I'm taking a trip to Scotland in August and will be playing at several British Open courses that require golfers to have a recognized handicap.
Is there a way to do this without joining a club? Anyone have experience playing at top courses abroad that require a recognized handicap? I typically play at a number of public courses in the Atlanta area so there isn't a "home" course for me to enter my scores at.

Good one. You're a funny guy...
There's more to it than using some tool to keep your scores. My understanding is it has to be officially recognized by the USGA or some other golf association in order for it to be valid at these courses I'll be playing at. I just didn't know if I have to do this through a specific club or if I can just sign up with the USGA. I'm sure there are people on here who are willing to help.

Do they typically have a minimum number of rounds you have to play there in order to keep a handicap?

At The Oaks, we can sign you up on the spot for a year term for $25...it's easy.
There are plenty of people who aren't members who I've personally entered into it.

I'm in the Atlanta area, but thanks anyways. Does your club allow members to enter scores online or is it all POS.

I know that the Louisiana golf assc does. Youre in Atlanta? Try a local club. Augusta?

I started playing golf in 1961 and immediately realized that handicaps are stupid. Just play golf. Play by the rules. Handicaps are like playing cards and saying hearts are wild. It's irrelevant. Hell, you could play Bill Clinton rules..one mulligan per hole.

You can sign up as a USGA member, and then enter the scores at most golf courses after your round. You may even be able to do it at home.

In Georgia, just find any club and they'll be able to get you going for 25-35 for a year. Check of they're on GHIN. Easiest handicap updating and way for people to check
