Food in my Bugout Bag

I'm happy with all of my setup except food. Right now I have pop top cans of soup (beans and ham )
But that's too heavy. I carry around too much metal and water in that. What should I be looking at instead?

MREs. One can last you a day or two if you are easy with it

I was wondering about jerkey. I know it's salty but it's also energy dense. Are energy bars a bad idea?

Packets of Tuna, not the cans. The packets are light

Get some MREs and break them down and tape together the stuff you will eat (crackers, main course, dessert). Throw the rest of the stuff away, you can easily tote around a couple of days worth of food without much weight.

noodles and rice are very light
freeze dried anything will be lighter than jerky. But you will need to bring more water to hydrate things or use pond water and purify it while cooking.
Convenience is heavy.

I like that idea.

An MRE barely weighs anything. They come in small little packets too. Why waste your time and probably space splitting it up? Why waste your time putting anything else in your bag. I have a couple of boxes and could probably go 2 months on those if I needed to

Its all about weight versus caloric percentage...I would suggest making your own MRE's in quart to gallon sized Ziploc bags. Breakfasts could consist of light non-perishable items like freeze dried fruits, oatmeal, grits, powdered eggs, and even properly stored Bisquick mix. Lunch/Supper meals could be 5 minute parboiled rice with beans and Ham/Beef TVP. To get nutrients and carbs you could pack instant potatoes, freeze dried corn, cabbage, etc....Noodles are quick and easy...Even Mac and Cheese last quite awhile, if stored properly...there are websites out there that offer HUGE selections of freeze dried fruits from apricots to cranberries, and vegetables from mushrooms to freeze dried broccolli....

A quick Google search got me all kinds of hits to sort through. Do you have any specific recommendations of where and what to buy?

Honeyville has the best selection of freeze dried veggies and meats, but Mother Earth has a great selection in the appropriate sized portions you're looking for (as opposed to #10 cans)

You must have different MRE's than what I've been eating.

The full package for an MRE has lots of wasted space, and stuff you may or may not use.
I think MRE's are a bad idea for a bug out bag, but maybe that's because I've been eating them for the past 3 months. They are heavy, aren't designed to be carried in a pack, and are hard on the stomach. If you do carry MRE's, I strongly suggest some Pepto pills or something like that. Freeze dried food would be much better and lighter. Leave one can of soup in your bag, it can be used to boil water in after you eat the soup, and the soup will have it's own useful water.

You've been eating some heavy fake stuff then. Do you honestly think they are heavier than eating regular food? My MREs consist of a main course, a side course, two snacks, and a drink. They are maybe 10"x5" and weigh as much as the food in them. Take them out of the plastic pouch they are in and they thin out a lot. That thing has air in it. I carried 2 MREs in my camelback and didn't even notice them compared to the water I needed.
There is zero wasted space in the ones I have. Like I said, they come with all of that, in the same size 1/2" thick pack, that has a heater pack in it.
I have a pretty solid stomach, but I think they aren't bad. They all have this faint MRE taste, but are definitely edible.
They obviously gave yall the shitty tasting boxes
