Klosterman is awesome. always picks up some quirky insight on pop culture things that escape me sometimes
Don't know if youre into podcasts, but he and bill simmons are pretty tight bros. He does episodes with him regularly and occasionally guest hosts. always entertaining

I have heard some of their podcasts. I like the way that Klosterman writes about music. He doesn't try to describe music with words -- like music reviewers try to do, but which is pretty damn near impossible -- but instead he writes more about the reactions to the music from people, and how the music intertwines with pop culture.
Lester Bangs also didn't try to describe the music so much as he described how the music made him feel. And he was really good at this: Lester Bangs on Astral Weeks
I'm trying to find modern writers that write about music in a way that I really enjoy reading. Like how David Foster Wallace wrote about tennis. I love tennis, and he made it even more fascinating because he was just that talented and he loved tennis as well.
I love music as well, and I realize it's a difficult thing to write about, but there's gotta be somebody out there (besides Klosterman) who is doing it well. I definitely DO NOT enjoy reading your standard album reviews. I find them most unhelpful.

Klosterman is an interesting writer who I pretty much disagree with everything he has ever said. That's the mark of a good writer though -- I don't agree with him, but I look forward to his writings and find him engaging. It's like having a bar argument with a buddy about the socio-economic implications of Call Me Maybe. You'd have to be drunk.
I like Steven Hyden and Michael Azzerad a lot, particularly Hyden's historical pieces. And the entire stuff of Chunklet pretty much hits my sensibilities perfectly. Their Indie Cred test is hysterical, and spot on.
ETA: I also usually enjoy whatever the AV Club has, particularly things like "We're No. 1" which looks at old #1 records and what it means. Fun stuff.

I have.
Have you read this one on Michael Joyce? The String Theory
Both are great, but I actually think the piece on Michael Joyce is the best tennis article I've ever read.
