Backup QB Plan

Chase Daniels now gone with former most misspelled champ Robert Meechum. An Asomugha signing would be a Saints HOF misspell candidate. But who's gonna be the backup now?
Veteran route- The most obvious choice to me is Luke McCown. He stuck in camp last year and was in the last round of cuts. The dirty birds snapped him up the next day and he was Ryan's backup all year. UFA again.
What other vets ya think could be viable? There's a slew of'em available.
Rookie route- I've been wanting to see the Saints expend a pick maybe as high as 4th Rd for a QB with a higher ceiling than Daniel. Look how Daniel became esteemed after 3 seasons and 9 pass attempts! I last mocked Matt Scott in the 5th Rd from AZ. I've longed for Payton to develop a guy that could turn into trade value like a Schaub, Cassel, Kolb, etc.
Let's push as high as 3rd Rd for this conversation. That high you might come up with Bray, Glennon, Dysert, & Landry Jones as well. Would you like any of those? I had early hope for EJ Manuel but think he's zooming upwards on big boards.

Some dude that will quietly ride the bench and play for the minimum.
Jarrett Lee comes to mind.

I wish we had the luxury of spending a mid round pick on a QB, but we just don't this year. I would have like Bruce Gradkowski (butchered spelling), but Pittsburgh scooped him up. There seem to be a good bit of choices on the back up QB market (Cassell and Kolb both being cut. Probably would still be too exxpensive though), and I think we'll do the usual 7th rd-UDFA.

the list of vets is long. I'm interested in who peeps would like to see if one of them.
Or can you put it all on a rookie? We had Brunell as a fall back when Daniel was a rookie.

Sean Renfree, QB
QB Sean Renfree wraps up a career that has been full of good statistics, albeit relatively few victories. Still, he's going to depart after the bowl game with some of the top numbers in school and ACC history. By completing 66.3 percent of his throws this year, he's on pace to break his single-season school record of 65 percent set last year. While he holds or shares 14 school records, he's not going to do much damage by running with the ball and that could make him vulnerable against a Cincinnati team that's stingy with its red-zone defense. He has thrown for 50 career touchdowns among his 861 all-time completions as a three-year starter.

What do yall think about that la tech qb that just came out? Could we get him as an UFA?

I'm all for a cheap vet right now, we don't have the luxury of using a pick on QB this year. Maybe next year.
I don't think you can really put too much stock into backup QB. If Brees goes down, we're screwed regardless who steps up.

Scot's got potential but he'd near a year or so on PS to get to NFL caliber.

I would be OK with Matte Scot.

I think the Saints will go out and sign a vet at backup QB. I don't think this is the year to draft a QB.

agreed. Mat Scoot is someone that Brees could groom into a potential starter IMO.

Fitz or Brian Hoyer for vets.
Aaron Murray Georgia
Zac Dysert Miami of Ohio for college.

Tyler Bray is going to be a decent NFL quarterback, just not fit for the Saints system.

disagree. Schaub, Kolb, & Cassel all were not high profile QB prospects that showed so much potential when getting reps that they both led the teams to some wins and became valuable commodities...
Kolb was a #36 overall. Traded for a #51 and thought of at the time, top notch CB DRC
Cassell was a #230 7th Rd. Traded for a #34 overall
Schaub was a #90 3rd Rd. Traded for a #39 & #48 overall
They all proved well as backups and turned into valuable draft pick currency. The Packers prolly could have got a pick for Flynn, a #209 pick, but let him walk outright like Daniel.
