This has to be the worst thread this month. James would be an all star in the jordan era. We'd be talking about him and Jordan as the best two players. Something like Brady and manning.

it's glorifying the past. it happens in all walks of life. the thread about wilt calling out the 80s for not playing defense like they did in his day was awesome in this regard

it's like people who think the present is more dangerous/violent than when they grew up...and they grew up in teh 80s/90s (which was the most violent period in american history not during a war)
Completely agree.

Yeah not only every other sport, but any industry has increased in sophistication and competition in 20 years, but we are suppose to believe the NBA hasn't. Disregard players today are not only more athletic, but have way more opportunities to develop their game as opposed to 20 years ago. Today's technology allows us to really scrutinize players games more, as opposed to the 80/90s where such avenues were severely limited. Takes a lot more skill to play defense today, than back when you could simply apply more physical contact when you're getting outclassed. imagine Bron being able to just use his physical attributes with brute force back in the day. Elbow by Bron, yeah good luck with that.

RA'd to name this board the "LJ vs. MJ" board.

It's really gotten old. I'm headed over to the soccer board for some entertainment.

Lebron is in a class of his own athletically in 2013. Can you imagine someone being this athletic 20 years prior? He would dominate the NBA in Jordan's era, just like prime Jordan would in today's game IMO. Fact is, Players are much more athletic and defenses are much more sophisticated now than 20 years prior. This fascination y'all have with the "good ole days" is absurd.

The league was incredibly physical back in the day. Guys would get knocked on their arse for driving the lane, as a warning not to do it again, and the hand-checking rules allowed guys like Jerry Sloan to basicly mug people on the court.

And the players adjusted to that style of play just like they do in today's game, but to say someone wouldn't make it earlier years because they are soft is wrong. They would adjust their game accordingly.

This is true, but it also didn't make defenses better back then.

Here's another thing I don't understand, if I had to pick one single player who would best be able to adapt to hard fouls while driving the lane, Lebron would be the no brainer answer.

Then you have ask yourself, ok, how would those great defensive players from the 80s play good defense nowadays since they couldn't be so physical and couldn't handcheck? Same thing.

If I list all the greats to play over the last 15 years and compare it to Jordan's list

1) a lot of those crossover
2) your definition of great has yet to be defined or agreed upon.

ETA: these players in bold are certainly questionably "great" players

why isn't Greg Oden on this list? his 82 games were fire. Truly a great player.
