There was a report that a camera guy got jacked up; so, probably, not your imagination.

Sure is. they talked about the camera guy earlier on Speed. They said he was ok.

You can tell from this video that the reinforced cross-over area of the fence is what caused the car to disintegrate. You can actually hear when it smacks it.
I believe the fence would have contained most of the debris if the cross-over wasn't there.
