Top rappers right now: (in no order)
1. Jay-Z
2. Kanye
3. J. Cole
4. Kendrick Lamar
5. Pusha T
6. Game (his last album Jesus Piece was great)
My point being macklemore is ok I guess but he is definitely not the greatest rapper alive IMO

I had a long post written up about production value, the dicotomy of a white rapper trying to make it in a black man's game, a road less travelled, etc.
Then I realized I was spending too much time on a guy that is going to be wishing he could afford the thrift store a year from now.

Pretty stupid post. The guy isn't signed to a label (personal choice), yet achieved the number 1 song in the country. His song Same Love has achieved high claim as well, it made it pretty high on the charts. His song Wings was used by the NBA for a commercial, bringing in even more money. He has a cult following, and is reaching out to many people that don't listen to or relate to the cliche rap bullshite (money, hoes, drugs), the dude is deep and has substance. As many have said, give his other stuff a listen. The guy has some serious balls to be as personal as he is in his songs. I hate most rap, but gave his album a listen. Outside of maybe 2 songs, his album is outstanding. Searching for reviews of his album I have yet to find a negative review of it. In fact, many people have proclaimed it as one of the best of 2012.
Funny you should mention the Thrift Shop ordeal as well, and being able to afford one. That song is all about consumerism, which is a topic he tackles really well. Not only is the song fun, but it's also about not needing to spend $70 on a shirt or any other ridiculous price on clothing. People fall victim to the labels very easily, and he's saying how people do not need that. The song is fun, and has as sick of a beat as I've heard in a while. I'm a fan.

I love younguns. Rap has been around 40 years and they keep thinking these pop tunes are revolutionising the game.

Wait, y'all actually believe this clown is a good rapper? He'll be relevant for a couple more months and we'll never hear from him again.
Thrift Shop was voted the #1 song of 2012 in Australia by Triple J. Take it for what it's worth since it's Australia, but the triple J top 100 is the largest democratic music entity that's out there. He also had another song in the top 20 or so.

Dont see how thats very relevant

It's probably not, but Triple J is a national radio station that broadcasts throughout Australia and plays just about everything and isn't bogged down by playing the same 20 songs in a loop. I think you have an open mind about music and are fairly progressive with what you like, you'd really enjoy that radio station. It's honestly better than anything we have in the States imo. Since I'm definitely a fan of Triple J and have been turned on to some other good bands that I would have never heard of otherwise (Little Green Cars, Jackie Onasis, Ballpark Music) then maybe it has some relevance since the Aussies seem to know what they’re doing in regards to music imo. Macklamore was also getting enough national airplay in 2012 to be voted the #1 song. I'm under the impression that he's just getting some notoriety now in the states, but I can't be certain, I've only been back for a few weeks now.

Not even a big rap fan, I tend to listen to people that sing and play instruments much more. But, that song took balls to make.
I'm not saying he's the best rapper or anything, but he's better than most. At least the guy makes meaningful shite. You'd have to listen to stuff outside of thrift shop to know that though.

Just listened to Otherside (remix) and was blown away. Like most others, I don't listen to much rap but I haven't been this impressed with a rapper since I first heard Lupe.
It is refreshing as shite when you hear a new message being out out through a new musical medium. (meaning you don't often hear rap over RHCP, etc. music).
This all is probably due to my rap ignorance and I'm sure others out there are doing similar stuff but damn, I like what I hear.

I'd bet all the haters have only listened to Thrift Shop. He may not be the greatest rapper, but I think his music has the most substance. I am not a fan of 95% of rap because of the gangsta/hoes/jewelry/ballin themes, which do absolutely nothing for me. Macklemore's most common themes, on the other hand, are substance abuse, consumerism, and equality, which hit home with me. I also love the fact that he did it on his own, and told the record companies to frick off, in an effort to keep his lyrical/artistic integrity. He is my favorite for sure, but I'm certainly not a rap fan. I think it says a lot that he lured me to actually buy a rap album, which as it turns out I absolutely love. Never thought I'd say that.
