DIY: Poor Man's Ice Spheres

I recently enjoyed a properly chilled glass of bourbon with out the adverse effects of dilution associated with adding too many small ice cubes to my glass @ a local Bourbon bar. If you haven't had the privilege of drinking your favorite spirit with the addition of an ice sphere then you are missing out. Unfortunately I'm not an OT Baller & can't shell out the coin for a Japanese Ice Mold. There are other alternatives such as silicon & plastic molds however, I decided on another solution.
First I filled a graduated measuring cup with water in a non specific amount. It just so happened that 300ml was enough to allow complete submersion of the water balloon.
Next I filled each balloon & used water displacement to ensure uniformity in size. I found that 150ml gave me a sufficient sized ice sphere.
Then I placed each balloon stem side down in a cup large enough to allow the balloon to rest on the bottom with out compressing the sides. This picture demonstrates the flat bottom which was achieved from the process
Finally, after a 48hr nap in the freezer, I removed the ice sphere from it's latex housing & poured a few drams of Wathen's Kentucky Bourbon over it to sip on...
The ice sphere melts slowly & keeps your favorite spirit & an optimal drinking temperature. I place my glass in the freezer for 5-10 minutes between rounds to allow the ice to recuperate. The sphere is good for 3-4 drinks depending on your drinking intervals. Thanks!

I got a thing from Maker's Mark to make ice balls, but it doesn't really work all that well. It's hard as shite to get them out of the form.

Charging 200 bones for that Japanese Ice Mold is just ****ing criminal. My mind is blown. Surely nobody on here would shell out that kind of frivolous cash on something like that. Surely. Maybe I'm not giving it enough credit, but...wow.
To the topic brought up by the OP, neat idea!

Can someone explain to me why it needs to be a sphere? I have ice trays and one of them makes a pretty good size rectangular cube that I use for liquor.

I don't know that the shape is the important part as much as the size. Less surface area means slower melting. That means the drink won't get as watered down. More smaller cubes have more surface area than one large cube.

I have some of the Tovolo ones too... They work great but you gotta have a big glass. I'm always afraid I'm gonna chip a tooth when taking that last sip

you trying to ferment 15 gallons? I just had an idea from my still making research. why not use a keg to ferment in? take out the sankey lock on the keg, find some stopper and add a blowoff tube.

someone brought these over and left them at our nye party, used them a few times, no noticeable difference from the ice balls the 2000 dollar press makes.

Not quite, but batches that will yield 10-gallons of finished product.

Definitely an option, it's been done before. I have a 13-gallon brewcube right now but I don't like it much at all. LINK

I think I will. I should have an extra keg as well somewhere. Probably at my bro's house.
I already use a keg as a big brew kettle for the big batches.
