I remember grocery shopping with my aunt when I was relly young & would visit her during the summer. I know she shopped in that area, and I thought it was Piggly Wiggly, but not sure.

not positive, but that sounds right.
Wasn't Calvin's a Piggly Wiggly at one time? I think I remember it being a PW, then Acadian Food Mart, then Calvin's.
This would have been around mid eighty's IIRC.

Close, but yes it was a PW as was a grocery store on Perkins road next to Juban's, the one on Perkins was Acadian, and Calvin's was just "Bocage" and the two store owners had a loose connection, I think they were even part of the IG chain at one time

Same shopping center as the Caterie and and an eckards if I remember correctly, I even think it was a "Natonal" food store before that

yes, there was definitely a Eckards there. I grew up on Cloverdale and would ride my bike there sometimes. Seems like there was a clothing store in that shopping center at some point too. right next to Jubans.

HiNabor needs replacing, it's run and managed circa 1974 style..either is inept or financially underfunded..the cheesy 1980s aqua blue, neon, and dust bunnies galore..needed sh!tcanning years ago.
The store location and shopping center can handle an upgrade, and an upgrade will do even stronger numbers.
HiNabor's selections were cheap, be it wine, produce, meats,etc..standard bottom-barrel AG line..not catered to the area's customers.
And the front of the store being hemmed in by a Notary Public and Cox/Entergy/ATT pay station..was sorta Check-Cashing/Payday Loan-esque tacky for a Grocer.

Hence my time portal. When I go there, I go back in time to the late 60's early 70's. Please don't take my time machine away.

You can still go to your money saver on Winbourne. That place is like going to a third world country.

It's hard to imagine it being a decent grocery store under its current management/ownership no matter how extensively it's renovated. This is really a shame.

Agreed, I was looking forward to something new. I live within a 5 min drive from Albertsons, Calvin's, WF, HiNabor, and Maxwells. Calvin's has disappointed me recently, Albertsons is good for a liquor run and stock up run.

Calvin's was Bocage IGA, Perkins at Acadian was Acadian IGA and Scenic Highway was Scenic IGA. Not Piggly Wiggly. All were owned by Mr. Zigler who lived in Jefferson Place. All real estate was leased. When he decided to get out of the grocery business and retire, he closed Acadian and Scenic. Calvin Lindsley at Bocage was his manager and had started working at that store while in the 9th grade as a bag boy. He knew nothing else and Dr. hill, who owns Bocage Shopping Center did not want to lose an anchor tenant so he offered to co sign the note for Calvin. Hence Calvin's Bocage Market was born. When I was a kid that was a Winn Dixie and next door was a TG&Y 5&Dime. A poster here's dad was the manager.
The Crifasis family owns Hi Nabor and they have deep pockets. Whether they want to keep competing is debateble but they could walk away and not be concerned. I guess we will see shortly.

Close but Al Porche (he lived off of Cloverdale and is now living in Orange Beach working on a golf course) owned Acadian and there was a loose partnership between he and Jerry but each had their "own store". They also both jointly owned a piggly wiggly on Burbank for a short period.. And both the Acadian and bocage were Piggly wiggly stores at one point in there history

From my understanding, hi nabor is selling the store to Le Blancs and using the money to renovate the jones creek and other locations.
