Payton talks about Vilma's future; talks with Rob Ryan.

"Yeah, I don't think anyone wants to place him over that guard bubble and have to take on that block," Payton said. "And I think he's a guy that runs to the ball and has great vision, very instinctual football player. I think you take some of that away if all of a sudden he's playing over an uncovered guard and now his size becomes an issue.
"A lot of things may concern you with a player change. So, he'll play over on that weakside position and I that will be very similar to what he did this past year. Curtis Lofton, who's a little heavier, will play on that strong inside Mike position. So I think that part of it for those two guys transition pretty well."
quote:
"I don't know that we have the pieces in place that we feel comfortable with, or certainly there's a transition," Payton said. A lot of this process, as a matter of fact, he and I spoke for about an hour about certain players and where they line up the first day of OTAs. And then you take what you have on the roster and you begin to put them into these spots and then you tweak and you make adjustments and you look to make additions.
"I think the way that we're going to run this defense and the type of 3-4 that we're running will be such that you saw in Dallas or Houston. There will be some under defensive principles to it. Some reduction, which means that the left guard or weak guard for the offense will be covered at times, and I think that will help a guy like Jon Vilma as opposed to the traditional two-gap 34 front that many Giants fans knew back when Bill Parcells was there ... So I do think there's some work to be done obviously when you make a change like this.
"You have the scouts who need to identify what the prototypes are for these positions different from what the scouts and everyone else in the building viewed as a prototype for the 43 scheme. Now there are good football players that can fit into either one, but I think it allows everyone a chance to maybe visualize what we're looking for."

Nothing in that article is true Paddy or makes any sense. First coach talks about Vilma at OLB when Wilson and Junior are already playing there. Also his rant about researching the hiring of Ryan as DC and "asking everybody about him" is just wrong from everything I've read on this board.
Too much poon for poor ol CSP.

Payton is being pretty presumptuous.

I don't understand what Payton is talking about.

Didn't Wilson play ILB in college? Haven't we already said Lofton and Wilson at ILB, Vilma and Gallett at OLB and Shanle back to Nebraska?

Tez at the SILB, yes. Vilma at WOLB = disaster. That position is reserved for your best pass rusher. Last season, 18 players had as many or more sacks (10.5) than Vilma has had in his entire career. The strongside OLB would only be a slightly better fit, where he would cover the TE a decent amount (one of the few things he can probably still do adequately), but I don't think many TE's will have trouble blocking him on rush plays. Vilma won't be on the team next year except. Even at the vet minimum, there will be better options as backups in FA.

Yeah, Vilma on the outside would be a disaster, but he would be a good nickel/dime option. His contract is an issue though, especially since he doesn't fit into our base formation.

WTF did I just read...

Yeah I think Vilma might be the odd man out moving forward.

Exhibit A of why I'm skeptical when offensive minded HC decides to switch defensive schemes. They just don't get it. Hard to believe an often injured declining LB makes that transition this season.

I'd only mind moving Wilson to ILB of our top pick is the new rush OLB and Galette is spelling that new OLB.
Although I really hope Wilson stays on the outside. He honestly reminds me of a poor mans Mingo

I think that is Larry Holder not understanding what Payton was saying.
He is saying that he thinks Vilma can play ILB on the weak side. He even later talks about how they will often cover the weakside offensive guard which will help Vilma.
Take out the 2nd paragraph (Holder's summary) and read it again. Holder just got it wrong, IMO.

You beat me to it. That's exactly what he's saying. I think when he said Weak side, Holder assumed outside, but with two ILB you would have a strong/weak side ILB if that's that the terminology he's using.

Yeah I would say being over the guard puts im as the weak ILB

I absolutely love Vilma as a football player, leader of men, and an amazing contributor to the NOLA community. However, he is no doubt a 4-3 guy. His health, contract, and overall lack of size and ability to be effective in a 3-4 make him a liability to the team. I hope he finds continued success somewhere, but I don't think New Orleans is that place anymore

From ESPN: But both veterans could be gone before the start of the league year. The Saints are in a difficult salary-cap situation with more than $142 million currently committed to a 2013 cap that’s likely to be slightly higher than $120 million. Smith is scheduled to count $14.5 million against the cap. But the Saints could free up $10.4 million by releasing him. Vilma is scheduled to count $8.6 million against the cap. The Saints could clear $6 million in cap space by releasing him.
This is all you need to know. These guys are gone unless they change their contract in a BIG way.

I actually like Holder. But, I think this article kind of exposes his lack of knowledge.
#1, he got it completely backwards.
#2 basic football knowledge would have helped him recognize that Vilma on the outside in a 3-4 just didn't pass the smell test
#3, even if he misinterpreted Payton, the real story would have been that Vilma may be playing on the outside in the 3-4 which CLEARLY doesn't match his skillset. Look at the comments in this thread. Assuming Holder's understanding was correct, any knowledgeable person would have known THAT was the story.
