Actually, soccer players probably make a tad less than most people think. Their earnings are pretty similar to NFL players.

According to Business Insider, here are the top salaries as October 2012. LINK

Some teams in Russia, China, and a few other places will offer above market value salaries to attract top players.

The really high number you see associated with soccer players are their transfer fees.

It's not about a sports popularity in the world - it's about who in the world has the $ to buy shite.

They would make more money if soccer were big in the US - but it's not.

And America is the world largest consumer with the $ to buy the NFL/NBA and golf shite that is made in the countries that love soccer.

I think he was referring to endorsements as opposed to actual salary.
