I for one do not mind the hire of Rob Ryan. I know people say Gregg Williams was a guy who came in and did things that were frowned upon, but the fact is he got the talent lacking defense to be middle of the road and take away the ball. Rob Ryan has the same edge about him and the ego to go with it. If he is willing to come in and not knock heads with Payton, with the right players through the draft and FA it isnt a bad hire. All the defense needs is to be top 15 and take away the ball.
In 1995, as Cardinals CB coach, his team led the league with 42 takeaways 32 of which were interceptions.
In 1997-99 he was ranked coordinator of the year while putting together a top 5 defense in the nation all three years.
From 2000-03 Ryan was one of the best linebackers coaches in the NFL when he helped New England rank 7th in defense allowing a league low 17pts per game.
2006 as the Raiders DC, he put together a defense that ranked 3rd in yds allowed and 18th in pts allowed.
As Cowboys DC, Ryan's defense was not as good as in recent NFL jobs. The Cowboys did still put up 14th in yds allowed and 16th in pts allowed.
With the right people in house, and an offense like the Saints have he could be succesful.
I dont hate the hire, but I'm not in love with it either.

If this is true, I would have rathered keep Spags.
There have been very few things I have 100 disagreed with throughout Payton's tenure and this is one of them.

Would much prefer Grantham. Lets hope Holder is right.

I just hope he doesn't run his mouth too much. Its not hard to imagine Rob Ryan in the exact scenario Gregg Williams got us fricked for.

Keep in mind too that his defense was prob on the field a lot with romoception turning it over

I like his intensity and I think in that regard he's a good fit. Just hope that he and Payton gel

It's definitely odd to go for a Williams clone after Williams just fricked the organization raw.

Quite being a bitch!
I like the hire. Sweep the leg.

No Ryan led defense has ever made the post-season. I felt this was worth repeating.

A fiery sideline disposition does not make him the same as Gregg Williams.

Sean Payton lead offenses have made the post season numerous times

I always get a chuckle out of the ST hacks crying NOOOOOO when the organization does something you disagree with. Let me guess, Paeyton must be fired for making such a terrible decision (if this is true)? I guess you all know more about Rob Ryan than Paeyton and Loomis do? Yeah, that makes sense. How about they maybe wanted a 3-4 DC that believes running an attack oriented scheme rather than a bend don't break scheme ala Crenell?
While I admit that the historical statistics of his defenses don't look flashy, there is a lot to be said for the terrible organizations he has worked for as well as the lack of talent. Dallas had a ton of injuries last year that directly effected their D, and Oak/Cle are jokes.
Is he my ideal hire for us? No. But neither is Crennell. I personally wanted them to target a position coach rather than a current DC that carries a big name. Am I upset that they didn't do what I wanted them to do? Hell no. That would be downright silly of me to think I know better than they do.
Stop whining, people. I feel like I am having flashbacks to 2009 draft when the fools on here were ripping this team for selecting Morestead. It's tiring.

Browns, Raiders Romo and Garrett led offense. Do you think Brees and Payton can surpass the output of those teams?
