Mojang made $240 Million last year

Notch brought home $101.4 million of that.
All off of such a simple game. Sales are on the same pace as last year too.
I wonder at which point they stop updating this one and make a sequel just for a cash grab? Maybe when the other games they are working on fail and they need to make up for the money lost on them?

Have never touched Minecraft. Doesn't appeal to me at all. I guess I can understand why it appeals to some.

Awesome post.
Stout, I was under the impression that they were in this constant state of alpha/beta limbo with the game, and when they finalized it, they would release the final version and all who had purchased it already wouldn't have to pay a dime.

Yea no one that has bought it has to pay for any updates. I am just wondering when they/if they will ever stop updating it and say we are done then move on to a sequel. Not that there is a lot you can do with a sequel but people would eat it up no matter what.
A long time ago Notch said when he was finished with it that he would release it as open source so people could add onto it and mod it further but it's so big now that I don't see that happening.

Now, all of the sudden, as a result of how modern society works, I managed to somehow earn a shite-ton of money. I still like playing games and programming, and once I had the latest computer and consoles, there really isn’t much more to spend the money on than traveling. I might eventually get a driver’s license so I can buy a car.
This world does not make sense to me sometimes

And the game is constantly changing. Notch hasn't even touched it in over a year

Jeb and Dinnerbone do a much better job than notch did of interacting with the community to find bug fixes and what people want to have added.

Mojang is currently working on the mod API. I imagine it will be part of the 1.7/1.8 update released in the fall.

Not bashing Mojang, but this game is the perfect case study that graphics trumps gameplay for 90+% of gamers.
Not that it's a huge shocker.

Wow
Great game, I wish I could play it more. I need to build a new PC for that to happen.

You know it's on XBOX, right?
I know it is somewhat limited on there, but the core is there and it's fun.

Yup.
And I've said this before, but Minecraft can be used as a microcosm of society. Think of all the social experiments that you could run with this game? Think of all the parameters you could change to test all different kinds of scenarios.
You could write dissertations based on this game.
