hey figure out at the beginning that they have 17 days and change til the asteroid hits. Harrys platform is in the South China Sea. With ridiculous logistics, we assume the air force could fly Harry and Grace to Houston in 24 hrs. In that span, his whole crew has left the rig and gone home. Let's assume it takes another 2 days to get them all to Houston. They said they have 12 days to train in the movie. We're now at 15 days movie time. Now you have to stop at Mir and refuel. That probably takes about 12 hrs. Now you have to achieve escape velocity. It took Apollo 3 days to get to the moon with the most powerful rocket ever made. Those shuttles are nowhere near a Saturn IV. Either way, we're now at 18 days with a ridiculous amount of time management.
Distance from Earth to moon is 238k miles. I believe they said the rock was traveling at 25k mph. That's a 9 hr trip. Then wasn't the "Zero Barrier" 3 hrs? So you're gonna land, set up, and drill 800 feet in 3 hrs? Come on.
Many of your points are bad guesses. A brand new space vehicle capable of landing on an asteroid and taking off again is NO Apollo 3. This thing had to leave Earth's orbit and leave another body later. It had the speed to do the pit stop at MIR and sling shot the Moon to catch the asteroid. In a relatively short period of time.
About MIR: I feel that that whole sequence is pretty much real time, spare the time it takes to fueling the shuttle. Don't forget they had to evacuate.
I think the movie gave them just the amount of time that they needed.

The machine on the rover is a head scratcher.
Why? Harry gave them his plans for a drilling space rig lonnnng before this. And they had been working on it...that's how he knew how to fix them.

Why is there natural gas on an asteroid?
Why is there ethanol in space? Methane is a naturally occurring gas that can be abiogenic and gets trapped in ice crystals. Once these melt, CH4 can be released.

Why do they celebrate a blowout on the rig when in actuality the solution gas in that oil could have exploded and killed them all?
It was something exciting. It's Hollywood. The audience gets that motif.
Any other questions?

I think he was referring to the machine gun.

Doh. Forgot Machine *Gun*.

Ethanol occurring in space is not the same as Methane. Methane can occur in other worlds due to abiotic processes yes but the name "Natural gas" implies Methane, Other Hydrocarbons, CO2, H2S and Nitrogen. I understand you can have a Methane "Blowout" but saying you have a Natural Gas blowout is another thing.

We are laughing at an unrealistic movie. You can't defend some points as realistic then say this one is ok.
I like Armageddon and watch it when its on TV but some it's plot is a little realistic. I always tell my GR don't worry I'll volunteer to go and save the world. We can make 800 ft!
