Does anyone here honestly think Goodell Cost us a Superbowl?

I understand the disappointment, anger, even rage at the Commish, but really, with this historically awful defense, can anyone lay out a coherent argument for the 2012 Saints, intact, without NFL sanctions, as a SB contender?

if we get into the playoffs, anything can happen
the offense bothered me just as much as the defense this year. We couldn't sustain drives and were leaving the D in bad situations. We wouldn't have had such a terrible statistical D with Payton IMO

He at least cost us a shot at it. The defense was bad, but it was compounded by the sluggishness of the offense for stretches.

Defense was bad.
However, Payton does not lose to KC. If that Carolina game mattered at the end of the year, Payton doesn't lose it.
That gives one more game we have to win to possibly get the playoffs. I don't know which one would have gone differently.

Possibly the 2nd Atlanta game.

I don't. Defense cost us a shot at the Super Bowl. Gooddell is still a Nazi though.

No.

The play calling was very predictable. We had serious protection issues the first half of the year. The running game was non existent, and when it did come back, it was either a run up the gut or a trap or delayed sweep out of the shotgun.

Defense wasn't good enough, not with or without Payton.

This is all conjecture, but I disagree. The performance of the defense is linked (not completely) to the performance of the offense. The entire team was effected by the suspensions and the loss of Payton.
ETA: With Payton at the helm there is no way our defense gives up 7000+ yards.

Nothing Goodell did to the Saints caused the defense to be the worst in NFL history. That distiction rest squarely with the players and coaches.
All you have to do is review the KC game and the performance of the defense in that game say's it all for the season.

imagine the spotty play calling in those games we lost. GB, KC, 2nd ATL, Carolina (x2).
do you honestly think we wouldn't have won such close games with SP? I think otherwise, having a full staff to make adjustments is better than half a staff. we saw that with vitt coming back and letting kromer work with the line. now imagine if we had a head coach. the joy.

You can't examine a defense's performance in a vacuum.
You absolutely can't.

Saints were 13-3 last year, and 30 seconds away from having the Giants at home to get to SB 45... with virtually the same exact team as this year. So yea.. I think he might have cost us.

I concede the points that the defense would have not performed as poorly ... but, it is still my opinion that the defense was not good enough to carry the Saints deep in the playoffs and possibly not to the playoffs.

I guess the players and coaches are not human and are immune to distractions and stress. The defensive player we drafted in the second round didn't seem to be bothered by any of it. Oh wait...

You know how I know you have no clue what you're talking about? The offense completely disappeared in the 4th quarter in that game. I think we had one first down but it was mostly 3 and out, 3 and out, 3 and out. If the offense makes one FG drive in the 4th, we win that game.

It's hard to say. If we make the playoffs, we could possibly go to the big game. But there's just as much a chance we don't.
CSP's absence caused a 0-4 start. If you start with that, then I guess it's possible. I don't think we were Superbowl bound this year anyways.
But playing as horrible as we did on both sides of the ball, with CSP there, I believe we get in the playoffs.
Hard to say what would happen. I'm more concerned about the draft picks. That bothers me more than anything now that coach is back.

Hopefully, they aren't on the field enough to do so.

I agree with this. SP being there changes the face of everything. Maybe he overrules a gameplan change, or tells Spags what adjustment to make in game. His presence alone makes them a better team.
Now, can I make an argument that they would have been superbowl contenders? No. But, they have a better shot.

Hard to tell, but i doubt he cost us a title. We were too soft

To me that's a fair statement.
