What's the best way to prevent seasickness?

I usually take dramamine when I go offshore fishing but it makes me groggy. What's the best preventative for seasickness?

have you tried the non drowsy dramamine?

Don't go out in the first place?

If I am going only a few miles I take nothing. If we are planning a full day or night trip, I take Dramamine to be sure. I have never gotten groggy though.

Dramamine only made me get sick. Once I stopped taking it I was golden. Only time I get sick now is when we are 100 miles off shore and it's 4-5s. If you jump in the water, you won't be sick anymore FWIW

I've heard Bonine is more effective without drowsiness. Worked for me fishing in Kauai, taking one the night before and one the morning of. Any form of ginger helps too

Yep. It still seems to give me "medicine head". I hate that feeling.

When I take NyQuil I get that same feeling. Like you're not in your body feeling. It sucks.

Disclaimer: I'm not playing the "hard arse" card... this is serious advice.
I've never taken it. I didn't want to get where I relied on it then be screwed if I ran out or forgot it.
I never get sick, and have been fishing offshore for 20+ years. If you sit and watch the horizon you will make yourself queasy, but I stay busy fishing, tying something on, drinking beer, and just don't think about it.
It's all mental...
ETA: Also...

It's such a horrible feeling but I love fishing. If I don't take Dramamine its guaranteed I'll get sick. If I take it, I get groggy and fight the seasickness the entire time we are fishing.

1
Take one to two ginger capsules with 8 oz. of water before stepping onto the boat or boarding the ship.
2
Eat as many ginger snaps as you comfortably need to help settle your stomach.
3
Sip the ginger ale for the duration of your trip or anytime you begin to feel seasick.

Patches work the best, but they'll make you drowsy too. Try some ginger about 30 minutes to an hour before you go out.

I agree. It's mostly mental. The first time I ever got seasick was a miserable experience. It's hard not to think about that every time I go back out. I try to stay as busy as possible. If we are on the fish, I'm good. If we are just bouncing around for a long period of time, my wheels start spinning and I start turning green. I've found that I can fight it off more when I take a Dramamine but it just makes me feel like shite.

I get seasick taking a shower. The patch works like a champ for me.
