Hiding a gun in plain sight

After reading stories about thieves stealing safes full of guns I was wondering if anyone uses household items to hide their guns?
Books on a shelf, strapped under a piece of furniture, anything NOT a safe.
Just curious...

My safe is built in the wall and bolted down... Goodluck

One of my safes weighs over 500lbs the other is tethered to a queen sized solid oak bed frame with a braided steel cable. The only person walking off with those is the Hulk.

You have to look at the whole situation, are you protecting the guns from theft, fire, children etc
You get a safe heavy enough and bolt it to the ground and wall should solve the problem of a thief toting it away, but no matter how big and how heavy it is, someone will figure out how to compromise it.
Do like you are suggesting and leave them out, a thief may or may not find them, but a fire surely will, as will most kids
you just have to look at what your objectives are and stack the odds in your favor, nothing is fool proof

Most fire proof safes are very heavy. Bolt that to the floor and you'll be in good shape.

I have 2 kids and obviously want them to be safe. I also want my gun to be available and loaded in the house so me and my wife can use it for protection. I have a small safe for the pistol, a wallmount safe for my shotgun but want to consider easier access.
Honestly, I am also wanting to think ahead about possible hiding places in case the Gov't decides to come knocking and asking...

That doesn't bother you being that close to a window? I guess I'm partial to people NOT knowing what I have.

If you are the kind of person who would get the attention of the ATF or FBI, I don't want to advise you on how to stash your firearms.
I swear, you people are freaking nuts.
Guns should be properly stored. If a kid visits your house you want there to be a zero percent chance that they will be able to find and play with your guns. Period.

<------right beside, pretty much everywhere i am. living room, bed, kitchen, etc. my thoughts on a home defense gun is, it doesnt defend very well leaning up in your closet when you are in the kitchen.

Best way to do it.
I'd be more worried about a thief using the tools in my shop to break into the safe. That seems easier than carrying a 850lb safe out the house. Especially since the doors have to be removed!
A quality safe will take time to get into. And it'll probably be heavy enough so that they can't just walk off with it. If you bolt it down, even better.
The doors on most safes are generally the most armored, so bolting one in a closet or wall will prevent people from being able to work on the sides or rear. An alarm system also prevents them from having all the time in the world.
That's the best way to protect your investment. You can probably do a pretty good job of hiding the safe too, if you get creative.
As for self defense. Pistol on the bedside in a quick access lock box if you have kids. I don't, so mine stays holstered on the bed when it's not on my side. Two steps from the bed is a loaded 870 in the closet with a trigger lock.
The 870 cost ~$300 so if it ever walked off, I wouldn't be missing a whole lot (in comparison to the guns with sentimental value in the safe).
ETA: A safe with external hinges is a good idea too.

quote:Please tell me what the point of having a home defense gun, locked away to where you would be raped and pillaged before you could access said gun? You could teach your kids to respect, handle, and ultimately leave guns alone in your house, and place them out of reach if another kid visits.

Any of you have any recommendations for a handgun vault that mounts to the inside of a bed frame?
