I'm looking to get into using a fly rod for perch and sac-a-laits. My dad use to do it so it may be something to get into together.
What do yall recomend for low end rods/reels, equipment I may need?

Academy had a little kit that I bought. Came with a few flys. It was not rigged out though.
There are a bunch of web sites that will show you how to tie the rigs, etc.
Good Luck

Orvis has a decent low end kit.
Redington makes affordable rods and reels. I would skip the Bass Pro/Cabelas stuff and at least move to a fly-centric company (like Redington). You can find deals on Steep and Cheap or Backcountry.com, but just researching and then buying from ebay may be a good best.

I've got a break down fly rod that I used to take backpacking up in Colorado and Wyoming. Catch some river trout mostly, where would one go fly fishing near NOLA?

One of the most fun ways to fish round here when the bite is on. I recomend using a sinking trailer bait about 1.5 feet below your bream popper. I catch twice as many on the trailor plus theres the opportunity to catch doubles

Get a 4-5 wt., 8ft., 4-piece rod as a starter. Look at St. Croix rods and Ross reels. Don't feel bad about spending extra money for a rod in this class because it will last you a lifetime. Get a travel case that fits the rod perfectly. Check out laflyfish for more info.

The guy who runs laflyfish.com is a good buddy of mine. He also writes the fly fishing column for Louisiana Sportsman magazine. If you're looking to spend under $100 on a complete outfit (rod/reel/fly line), he recommends either the Cabelas 3-Forks outfit or the Bass Pro Hobbs Creek outfit in 8-ft, 5-wt for freshwater. If you have a little more money to spend, look at the Redington or TFO outfits, they come with a warranty. Or at least get their rods. The reels and line will last a long time, but the rods will break, eventually, and the warranty guarantees a liftime rod.
For saltwater, definitely the TFO or Redington Pursuit or Torrent, in 7 or 8 weight. They have warranty and power to cast distance and land bigger fish. For salt you want a reel that is either machined or andodized to avoid corrosion. The Orvis and Ross reels are great for the money, so is Lamson Konic. With a warranty rod and a machined/anodized reel, your equipment may outlive you. Only the fly line will need to be replaced every 5 years or so.
It's a great sport. There are 9 clubs in Louisiana and lots of activities each spring. They catch LOTS of bream, white perch, reds, specks, white trout, and offshore species on fly rod. There's nothing like catching a big red on a fly rod in skinny water fishing from a kayak.

Forgot to mention. If you buy Cabelas or Bass Pro fly rods, keep the receipt. They'll replace the rod for a period of 1 year if broken.

White perch
Care to share the tips of how you catch these fly fishing? Been doing it many years and caught tons, but only maybe 5 total white perch fly fishing. Is it the water depth or bait selection that is my problem?

Caught a ton of bream growing up fly fishing. The local walmarks would carry some tiny bugs that we'd trim the whiskers on, sling out there and wiggle the rod from side to side a bit while slowly pulling in your line. They couldn't resist it.
Even had to go to the hospital and get a fly cut out the back of my head once.

I know Catch and all those Redstickers. They taught me how to cast, build rods and tie flies.

Is there a good place to buy a used Saltwater fly rod/reel around BR? I have read alot recetnly on the topic, it appears you get what you pay for. I thought a good way to save some money would be to buy a gently used setup. I checked LA sportsman and CL. Is there anywhere else to look besides ebay?

I did this as well. I ended up with about 20 fly rods and reels, and more equipment than you could put in a closet. Been fishing all over the US and in 2 countries.

i used to do this all the time, it's been awhile...every year in april when the caterpillers start falling from the cypress trees...I would rig up a small popper fly about 1.5-2 ft above a bream killer that sinks slowly, the popper would act as a stopper for the bream killer and sometimes you catch 2 at a time.

I was at a flea market a few weeks ago and bought an old Martin Fly rod and one of the old auto reels for 20 bucks. I am getting back into fly fishing again, not having done it for about 40 years. I reall want to hook up with a big bass. I have never caught many sacalait with a fly though. Love using a popper for everything else, though.
A freind bought a nice ready to fish rig last week at academy for a lot less than I had to pay for backing, fly line, leader and tippet to rig like we used to. I even bought a tying kit.
