Homebrewing: Hops

In formulating my own homebrew recipe's, i want to be able to identify aromas, flavors, of each hop to determine what hop i want for a specific beer. What is the best way going about this?
I know a couple breweries have single hop brews, that could help, but that would take too long. Has anyone ever experimented with buying a multitude of varying types of hops and doing sample tests of each. Maybe taking a pretty neutral beer and dry hopping?

SMaSH recipes are the best for this sort of thing.

There are certain hops that have a distinctive flavor i.e. Cascade, Citra and Galaxy. But when you start combining hops the flavors react with each other in complex ways. There is probably a PHd of Hops somewhere that could answer you.

I have a base IPA recipe that I've been using for the last three years. The only thing I ever change are the hops (not the hop schedule).
Total IBUs: 80
FWH IBUs: 20%
60min IBUs: 50%
20min IBUs: 20%
5min IBUs: 10%
This will help you pick out individual hops and their contributions without having to make SMaSH beers.
