Will Ben Affleck ever get any respect?

Ben Affleck I think by the majority of Americans is more remembered for being a crap actor. From Armagedeon through the mid-2000s he only starred in pretty much crap movies like Pearl Harbor, Daredevil, and Gigli. It was becoming a consensus that he merely got lucky meeting Matt Damon and Kevin Smith, and that Damon was the real brains behind Good Will Hunting. Then he started getting behind the director's chair and started making great movies again. I still don't think he's a great actor, but its now hard to deny that he is a great director and a great filmmaker.
Affleck getting snubbed for Argo is a disgrace. I really just think that those snobs at the Academy haven't forgiven him for his Michael Bay and Kevin Smith days. If Martin Scorsese or the Coen Brothers directed this film, he'd be an almost shoein for the win.
And don't get me started about Tarantino also getting snubbed.

I stopped caring about what the Academy thinks.

I'm not going to say I told you so...but....
I said back way before Argo was released that:
1) Ben Affleck was probably the best sub 40 director out there, and easily Top 15-20 out of everyone.
2) That all three previous movies revealed a ton of talent behind the camera and a very classical approach to cinema.
3) That Argo would be awesome.
I think he'll get his due. It took Nolan a long time to get noticed and Prestige, probably a modern classic, had almost 0 critical recognition.
The Academy was...weird..this year. Life of Pi with 11 nominations? And that movie wasn't panned but it wasn't received well either (I'm not judging since I haven't seen it), but it's rare for a movie, especially with that content and strange story, to be nominated with such little real critical praise (since the Oscars usually serve the critics).
I hope that it isn't distaste for Affleck.

Leonardo DiCaprio says get in line. Afflecks number of snubs is like 15 times behind Leonardo's.

The problem is, and I know first hand, he is a fricking a-hole.
But yes he makes great movies now. In excited for Argo

So was Kubrick. And Hitchcock for that matter.
Ok I see a pattern here.
Explain the "first hand"?

Actually "the majority of Americans" probably consider him a good actor. Most Americans are pretty stupid and eat shite like Armageddon and Pearl Harbor up. I know I'm getting way off course here though. Your point is Affleck is an infinitely better director than actor and isn't getting his respect yet. I agree. I still really need to see Argo.

I actually don't completely hate affleck as an actor. I just think his style works a lot better in certain movies than in others.

Ok
A: I don't get the hate for Armageddon; it wasn't some theatrical masterpiece but it's entertaining
B: when I see someone say something like "the majority of Americans are _______" it makes me think wow this guys an a-hole. Because Americans are the only ones who sometimes like stuff that isn't perfect or deep

Sorry it does sound that way but this a board for movie snobs and most of what I said has an element of truth to it. And I'm not singling out Americans. Most people prefer crap like nick cage/Jason statham movies and avatar. I worked in a movie store in college. We couldn't keep shite like that in stock.

That may be true. I guess I'm just a huge non movie snob. I like some stuff like that (I like National Treasure, Gone in 60 seconds, and Avatar). But I also like very well done, deep films as well. I just want to be entertained usually when I go to a movie; if I want to learn something I'll look it up or watch a documentary. I don't think that says anything positive or negative about me; I understand these movies aren't deep, don't have some big message (well Avatar tried to have one) and are unrealistic. I just don't know why that means I shouldn't like them or that I'm stupid for liking them

Actually, he isn't nearly as bad an actor as gets credit for being. I think roughly 92% of the people who mocked Gigli, never even saw Gigli.
Not saying he is a great actor but I don't find him distractingly bad.
He is a pretty darn good director and the end of ARGO had me on the edge of my seat even though I knew the outcome.
