Stopping power is overrated. I think a better guage is running power. Any gun pointed at me is more apt to send me running than it is to stop me. A .22 wouldn't stop me, but it wouldn't have to!

I bet there have been more people killed by 9mm bullets than .40; .38; or 10mm.
You are correct because the .9mm is far more popular however, they often do not stop the person dead in their tracks. They will indeed die later but that wasn't what I was talking about.
I've personally seen people shot multiple times with a .9mm and they are very much capable of still shooting back at you. Not so much with the larger rounds.

There are only a few things that will stop a perp dead on his tracks. Number 1 is a shot to the central nervous system, meaning a spine or head shot. Number 2 is a shotgun or rifle. None of the CC guns anyone carries, or any full sized 9, 40, or 45, will effectively stop someone immediately like a rifle or shotgun. They just don't have the muzzle energy for it. In any law enforcement or military use, the pistol is simply the gateway to a larger weapon. That is true "stopping power."
That being said, my dad carries a Kahr P380. He finds it extremely easy to slip in a pocket. He could have a beautiful 44 mag for CC but if its sitting at home it's no good. The reason people carry handguns is for compactness and a "need it right now" scenario. The more comfortable a weapon is, the more it will be carried, and the better it is for the user.
I wouldn't feel undergunned if I had a 380. I would carry it more and as long as its reliable, no issues there. My recommended 380s are the Kahr P380, Ruger LCP, Keltec P3AT, and Bodyguard. Just be sure to run a few hundred rounds through them before you trust them.

quote:Well now I'm not sure. I can tell you that people shot with larger rounds can still shoot back. THAT comes down to shot placement; in which case, it would be a wash.

A man shot in the heart still has 10 seconds of oxygen in the brain. At least according to an FBI study I read on caliber size effectiveness.
I'd love to hear more about the "people" you've seen shot multiple times with a 9mm. LED...or grew up in a bad neighborhood?

24 years as a LEO.
I base my opinions on my observations over the years. Generally, bigger is better. Of course, there is that one perfect shot that will drop a guy dead in his tracks with a .22 but, that is pretty rare.
More important than anything is double tapping. ALWAYS double tap. It compounds the shock effect and it far more likely to be effective in stopping.
The other really weird thing is that bullets don't seem to hurt scumbags as much as they do good people. I can't tell you how many times, I've seen career criminals get shot multiple times and they are relatively okay. Shoot a decent person with a .22 and they drop dead.
I'm not basing anything on a FBI study, just my personal opinions here.

I have that gun and I like it quite a bit.
I liked it b/c of the similarity to the 1911 platform.
Fill it with holler points and you are G2G.
I use the XDs in .45 now though.
