When was the eye logo made?

I know we had it on midfield in the 80's, when did LSU first use it?

Without a doubt.

And immortalizes the awesome band Survivor & the equally awesome Rocky 3.

Look I love the eye, matter of fact I think it should be on all of the stationary and be the official logo for athletics if not the whole university. Because it unique. Nobody in college football has anything close to it. But its not really all that creative. The idea was ripped from the song and there is nothing wrong with that. They certainly have gained alot more from something they came up with on their own. Rather than the money they paid to a design firm for that god awful toonces.

i've come to terms with the eye, but the whole idea was based on that shitty song and the brief moment of pop culture history around it. i thought it was totally cheesy at the time. i still don't love it, but it has outlasted the history behind it so i find it less offensive now.

And yet despite Tigers being one of the most common mascot names in all of sports, no one else came up with it.
When you do something that no one else has done, we call that "creative".

A friend of mine from HS who was a graphic design major was working for the athletic department in the early 80's. They asked her to come up with a unique Tiger design and since Rocky was popular, along with the song Eye of the Tiger, and the fact that the composer of the Rocky music score was an LSU alum (Bill Conti), she designed the iconic Eye of the Tiger.
Since she was a student employee, she could not copyright the design and has never received a dime of royalty off of it.

Creative is subjective. Some will like it, some won't. But it's hard to argue with its' uniqueness.

Since you asked about the origin of the midfield logo at Tiger Stadium. I'd like to take this moment to clarify its origin.
.
It all started during my freshman year at LSU: Having quickly become a legend with the coeds, I took a sabattical to Thailand, was kidnapped, and wound one evening up in a house of ill repute. Upon waking the next morning I noticed this awesome new tattoo on my arm and asked the seventeen (why seventeen? because that's my lucky number) ladies in bed with me where it came from. They told me it was the ancient Thai symbol of sexual prowess which they had bestowed on me because they had determined that I was, quite obviously, the reincarnated sex god of Thai legend (symblolized by the tiger) who had returned to earth to pleasure them all. Since I couldn't argue with any of these assumptions and I really liked the design I never had it removed; in fact, I have worn it proudly ever since (see below).
After returning to school word of my sexual talents spread rapidly and I became an even bigger hit with the coeds, sometimes entertaining entire sororities in a single weekend. One of my favorite romping areas was the field at Tiger Stadium since it would accomodate the required large crowd - me and my scores of ladies. Sadly, however, I soon graduated and left Baton Rouge to seek my fame and fortune as the world's foremost renaissance man. After I left, several dozen rather misty-eyed sorority members sneaked into the stadium one night and painted a replica of my tattoo on the midfield as an eternal tribute to my memory. The AD at the time (Broadhead I believe) saw it, liked it, and since two of his daughters were Tri-Delts who helped paint it, left it there. It has been there ever since and, I'm betting, will remain there as long as there are several thousands of coeds, both past and present, who, upon seeing it, remember me and get all weak-kneed.
And that, my friends, is the true story of the origin of the Eye of the Tiger. Don't believe me? Just catch me at a game this fall or on the beach in Ft Walton/Destin this summer and I will show you the original.
All hail to me, billybowlegs: direct descendant of blood-thirsty pirates and the originator of the Eye of the Tiger!

Cool story. If she cannot recover a dime in royalties, perhaps you can help establish her role into the tradition she helped create. Post her name. She seems to deserve recognition.

I have a Steve ford print from 85 with the eye as the midfield logo.
