The stock length and the weight are a problem with the full size gun. I had actually wanted to get him a henry golden boy chambered in 30 30 but he struggles shooting mine cause its so heavy.

I have the old shitty 788, and it's been a great rifle. When my son gets old enough for youth hunts, he'll be using it.

Feed that boy and make him work out!

a youth model stock is 1" shorter than a regular model.
1" does make a big difference on a kid but if he's 11 and a bit tall for his age, you should be able to go with a full size rifle in 7mm-08 and the extra weight will help with the recoil.

I feed him all he can hold. I think the problem is making him work so much

I will never own a ported rifle.
The added noise can cause flinching just as bad as the actual recoil.
Earmuffs over earplugs. It doesn't seem to bother the kids that shoot mine. They don't know it's loud.

X-Bolt Midas Micro Browning

If Weatherby made the vanguard in 7mm 08 they would have sold a rifle yesterday. I also held the marlin and the action felt like a mossberg. Not saying a bad gun the action just felt loose and cluncky.

I like the remington model 7 in 260, but that 7mm-08 is also a nice round.
Browning is making an x-bolt micro as well thats in that model 7 price range.

Angus,
Sounds like you're on the right track. Of the choices you mentioned, I'd get the Remington. OTOH, there's no shame w/ the Vanguard as it seems like a fine rifle. I'm reserving judgment on the Axis for right now until I have some personal experience w/ it.
When my son first started hunting at 11 y/o w/ a 308 Win, I worked up a reduced recoil load using the 125 Nosler Ballistic Tip bullet at 2400 fps. He killed 5 deer w/ it. Moved him to full power loads at 15 y/o. Planned on moving to full power one year earlier, but stayed w/ the lesser loads as he suffered a broken collar bone playing football. (He still killed 2 deer that year.) Reduced recoil loads still have some kick to them, but not bad. The 308 Win reduced recoil load he shot was about like a full power 243. I'd think that reduced recoil loads in 7-08 and 308 would be nearly indistiguishable.
Other things to consider:
-Yes, be sure the stock fits him. The main consideration is the length of pull. You may end up using a youth stock now and moving to an adult stock in a few years.
-Consider a "sissy bag" the first few times he shoots the gun. Place a small sand bag between the buttstock and his shoulder.
-At the range, use plugs AND muffs.
-Get a GOOD recoil pad installed (or do it yourself if you're a little bit handy). I used "Limbsaver."
I hope you and your son have a great many hunts. Some of my best memories w/ my son are hunting related.

Has anyone here shot a 308 with reduced recoil loads? If you have what would you compare it to recoil wise? Any experiences good or bad with any of these? TIA

I have an 8 yr old that started hunting this year. I had a model 700 in 270 already that was my dads.I got a youth stock for it on eBay and got some managed recoil ammo.he is a crackshot and recoil is minimal.I will put. the full size stock on when he gets bigger.

After taking little angus with me shopping this afternoon I decided on one that wasn't on my list. After looking st all different models I wound up getting him a ruger american in 308. Awesome feeling gun tight action and a crisp trigger. We will see how it shoots later.
