How pissed would you be if they denied you the record? Honestly, I'd lie and claim the record if I could. When someone fights a fish that big for how ever long it takes shouldn't be denied the record just because someone "touches" the rod. I realize rules are rules, but sometimes people make stupid rules and therefor they should be changed.

That rule is stupid IMO
Have the IFGA guys ever tried to fight a fricking fish?!

I would lie about it. Did somebody take the rod from him? Or just adjust the drag?
I did't read. Sorry.
I would lie, FTW!

He didn't want that dude to get the line caught up in the anchor, so it doesn't count. Ridiculous.
They should have all gotten on the same page about that.

I am sure there is a lie detector, they had one for the St. Jude tournament at the house. The winner of the tournament was taken to one of the houses in the neighborhood and given a test to make sure there was no cheating, much more at stake with a world record fish...

they would likely give a polygraph test to the angler if he/captain hadn't admitted it.

wow, never would of thought they would do this. i would think a fish that big and the "sportsmans' honor" would be enough. is there prize money given to record holder by the IGFA?
Posted on 12/11/12 at 9:24 am to nhassl1
They give a polygraph for people that catch tagged redfish in the STAR

Lie detector!? Really!? Damn!

Damn, what if you just got nervous and blew the needle up and you really had caught the damn fish?
No new Chevy?

I think They put you on a lie detector machine
Posted on 12/11/12 at 9:27 am to BRgetthenet
There are rules for a reason. If you want a record, you have to do it by the book. period.
Not saying I wouldn't lie, but you have to understand all the dumbfricks that would claim a world record that they caught on a long line, net, etc...

Not sure how those machines work but I know it measures your "anxiety" before, during, and after questions. So I assume they could tell
But yeah, you fail, no new chevy, champion, etc..

Having a couple of world records...
I would be ticked if someone that passed me - did so by not following the rules..
touching the rod is there for a real simple break point - touching the rod can aid the fisherman.. if he didn't catch it by himself.....or herself.
anyone fishing for record catches knows the rules inside and out..
I lost a chance at a potential world record once because I caught a fish - put him in cooler.. and took another cast and lost my line and hook... no record for previous fish...

From the comments
quote:Sure he did
The International Game Fish Association (IGFA) rules are very clear: no one can touch your rod while you are bringing in a fish. In a tournament in the Bahamas, the mate on our boat touched my rod when I was bringing in a Blue Marlin, which would have won the Calcutta and many thousands of dollars. Our captain said to forget it; everyone hides it, lies about it, and breaks the rules. I disqualified my catch by reporting infraction voluntarily, and we fired the captain. Either the rules count or they don't.

We have gotten free costas, free rods and reels because of world record catches.
In fact set a fly rod record on a TFO rod and a week later another company sent me a much nicer fly rod.
