am sure there is a lie detector, they had one for the St. Jude tournament at the house. The winner of the tournament was taken to one of the houses in the neighborhood and given a test to make sure there was no cheating, much more at stake with a world record fish...

and believe it or not cheating in a fishing contest in many states is a felony...

I know someone whose dad did jail time for cheating in a tournament... and one that got arrested for cheating in the GITR...

want a world record... follow the rules..

What are your records?

What record did you not get because of said story?

The International Game Fish Association (IGFA) rules are very clear: no one can touch your rod while you are bringing in a fish. In a tournament in the Bahamas, the mate on our boat touched my rod when I was bringing in a Blue Marlin, which would have won the Calcutta and many thousands of dollars. Our captain said to forget it; everyone hides it, lies about it, and breaks the rules. I disqualified my catch by reporting infraction voluntarily, and we fired the captain. Either the rules count or they don't.

should have fired the mate first

i understand the tournament rules/laws, but if you legitimately catch the fish by the means specified and are not competing for a cash or prize who are you cheating? how is a fishing contest law applicable here? i understand having 10lb. bass on a stringer and claiming you catch them is messed up but how the hell would one do that with a 400+ yft?

someone else handling the rod.. is a legit disqual...

we can disagree... but

If a quarterback throws for X yards in a game and almost sets a record... but there was a flea flicker and someone else threw for another 50... they don't count that person's yardage now do they.

the rules are there for a reason.. heck if someone handles a rod for someone because he was hot and tired and about to pass out - but for insurance reasons = he took a 5 minute break.. should they still get the record?

and.> i have had world records not be state records and vice versa.. simply because of the differences in the rules...

no big deal..

the world records are sanctioned by the IGFA which has set rules that all fisherman should know if they are going to be in a position to break a record.

Most tournaments base their rules on the IGFA rules.

the captain of the boat knew the rules and decided the give up a potential record to keep his customers safe/keep his insurance company happy.

question for you by the book boys. if the captain/deck hand or someone other than the person that fights the fish sets the hook is that fish disqualified?

i understand rules are for a reason but i think there has to be some lee way.

I think.... but this may have changed... nobody would cast or set hook for me or anyone in my family so....

but I think someone can set the hook on a trolled or dropped line and hand it off...

and I really don't think the captain did the hand off for insurance reasons.. he probably didn't want to chance losing the fish more than anything else.... hence lies the real problem..

i understand. i lost a "record" mako because i was too tired to keep the line off the boat so i know why the rules are there.

I lost what would have been an easy WR cobia on a fly rod years ago.. because he went into the prop..

i could have easily handed the rod to someone on the other side of the motor.....and landed the fish..

in fact the boat captain was pissed I didn't...

but I knew it had wr potential if not a lock.... so.. i didn't pass rod..

If the captain had the ability to negotiate the anchor line, them the angler should have been able to also. All he had to do was loosen drag and go around it.

I had a guy cost me the STAR yellowfin a few years back and all he did was pull it out of gunnel and hand it to me and I was yelling at him not to touch it. Actually told him not to reel which he didn't, it was his first time offshore.
