In the end, "Pelicans" really is the best team name for New Orleans'

I don't hate Pelicans...I think it is "state" driven....But!!
It just doesn't sound good....3 syllables just doesn't work for most team names IMO
I know its been said a million times, but VooDoo or Brass would be a much better option IMO

NBA:
Philadelphia 76ers
Cleveland Cavaliers
Minnesota Timberwolves
Portland Trailblazers
Golden State Warriors
MLB:
Baltimore Orioles
Cleveland Indians
Seattle Mariners
Washington Nationals
Arizona Diamondbacks
NFL:
New England Patriots
San Francisco 49ers
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
3 or more syllables is not an issue when it comes to team names. It's just a matter of getting used to it, in which case the number of syllables or the name itself won't matter.
Any new team name will seem strange at first. Also notice the two seemingly favorite names, the Brass and VooDoo, are both recent and already established New Orleans sports team names so they don't sound as strange to people. Pelicans will come around with time.

Interesting though that most of those names often get shortened when the teams are being discussed: Sixers, Cavs, Wolves, Blazers, O's, Tribe, Nats, D'backs, Pats Niners, Bucs.
Pel's? Peli's? P's? Cans?

Which has happened, over time.
The same will happen with Pelicans, somehow.
I think it will end up being Cans or Ps, but I like Pel's.

I really like Pels. thats what i will shorten it to personally. Reminds me of the Pens in hockey.

Warriors rolls off the tongue as 2 syllables. Nobody says worr-EE-ors

Different ballgame. Much slower with less action, so it isn't as awkward.

Notice that they almost always shorten it for sports with a lot of action on the play-by-play. Pels or Pelis is going to be what you hear a lot of.

And that is perfectly fine to shorten it for those purposes. Just trying to point out that 3 or more syllables can and does work for any sports team. and basically this:

Do you notice how people keep needing to point out other shitty names to try to make Pelicans seem relatively okay? That's the issue for me. "It's okay because it's not the absolute worst." Is that really what we should strive for?
