Need advice on yak upgrade

I currently have a Mallard Marine Marsh Rat
I mainly use it for hunting, with the occasional fishing trip. I am wanting to get something more outfitted for fishing that I can get around in a little quicker, without losing a lot of stability. I have looked at the Native Slayer, Jackson Coosa and Cuda, as well as the Diablo Adios and Hobie. I'm still going to be hunting out of it and would like the OB input. TIA

I've fished out of a Pelican Castaway, Native Ultimate 12, and a Jackson Cuda.
For hunting, 10 times out of 10, I would want to be in the Native Ultimate. It is ridiculously stable. The open storage would also be a huge plus for decoys or a dog.
The Cuda is a heavy sonofabitch, but better laid out for fishing situations, especially if you might be taking on waves (in or around a beach). The Cuda is also harder for me to paddle and track than the Native, partially because of its weight. For standing and fishing, both the Native and Cuda are stable enough to do so. The Native is more stable but you're lower to the water. When standing in the Cuda you are probably 8"-12" higher than in the Native, but you act like a damn sail in the wind.
If I were buying a kayak tomorrow to duck hunt out of and fish out of, it would, without a doubt, be the Native Ultimate. If I was buying one just to fish out of, I would take a long, long look at the Jackson Cuda (both sizes).
ETA: For open water fishing, I would stay away from the Coosa. It was designed with river anglers in mind and not open marshes, lakes or the ocean. If all you do it float fish rivers, get the Coosa, if not, the Cuda 14 or Cuda 12.
ETA Part 2: Watch this video from Jackson Kayaks. It is about the Cuda 12, but goes through what type of kayak fisherman would need which of their kayaks. It is very informative for the Jacksons. Now I want a Cuda 12, dammit.

Yea I watched the Jackson Kayak videos for the Coosa and Cuda, I really like the Cuda 12, but feel like the Native Slayer would be better for hunting with the open storage areas. I've also given a strong consideration to the NuCanoe. I plan on going to Pack & Paddle in Laf., seems like they carry every boat I'm interested in. Anyone ever been there?

If youre packing it in any distance at all, the extra 20-30 lbs of the cuda and the slayer will catch up to you versus the native ultimate. I know it doesn't have the built in features, but for an overall watercraft, I would definitely consider the native. The open storage is invaluable sometimes.

Everything he said.
Native ultimate would be great for hunting and fishing double duty. There's a lot of them out there too, you can probably find a deal on a used one if you look around enough.

The coosa is fine for the marsh and bays. You can stand on it too. Cuda is a big sumbitch.

Pack & Paddle is fantastic, and very helpful. May have some boats on sale now. Ask for Skip, as he is a kayak guru.
I own two Natives, a Manta Ray 14' and a Magic 14.5. For duck hunting, the Canak boats are better, like the Ultimate, as they have more storage area for dekes, guns, dogs, etc. Have never seen Slayer, so will go check out now.

OK, so the Slayer looks like Native's effort to copy the success of Jackson, who makes the Cuda/Coosa. Higher seat, more stable, but still a Sit-on-top with scuppers.
If you can wait, Pack & Paddle will have demo days in March-May, where you can try all these boats out. If not, longer means faster. Shorter is more manueverable. I like longer for the marsh and long trips; shorter for small waters and rivers.

I'm seriously considering the Big Tuna next year. i want something I can bring my daughter in and occasionally Mrs. Deacon if she behaves.
Just don't know how much effort it will take to paddle that big sum bitch by myself when going solo.

To me that would be the appeal of something like the NuCanoe. Anyone here have any experience with it?

You'll be pleasantly surprised. It may take a bit of effort to get going, but once started, the Tuna is quick. I'm always nervous about two in a yak, especially with people that have little experience. Alx and I used my Magic to cross Bayou Cocodrie, with bows and stands, and it was perpetually in danger of flipping.
To the OP, get to Pack & Paddle tomorrow night for Pint night. Big charity event with beers and fries, 10% discounts on just about everything. Also note, if you belong to either of the kayak clubs, they give you a 10% DISCOUNT ON KAYAKS AND SUPPLIES.

So you are saying if y'all would have flipped it would have been Alx's fault right?

If you are old, your yak or canoe must have enough stability so you can stand to ease the pain in your arse and back. Old farts also need a light weight boat with a very comfortable seat and good back support. These requirements eliminate about 85% of the boats on the market.

How does the Coosa compare to KC Kayaks?
Posted on 12/6/12 at 9:20 pm to TJP
i have the 12 foot one from academy, the heritage angler. its a great yak

I'm a big fan of the KC Kayaks. They are somewhat big, so they are a little heavier and slower than others. Great to fish out of, and I think it'd serve its purpose for hunting to.
